Costa Coffee — Restaurant in Scotland

Never experienced a Costa like this. The cafe was swarming with flies which were trying to land on customers' food, covering the LCD menu screens, and crawling all over the cakes, muffins, etc, in the cake cabinet. There were so many that had this been someone's house, I would've been concerned that there had been an unattended death. In view of this, my husband and I opted for a coffee and a hot sandwich each since the sandwiches were in wrappers where the flies couldn't touch them. Though friendly and polite enough, the barista was lacking in hygiene skills as when he splattered coffee all up the machine while making it, he only gave it a vague wipe over with a visibly soiled rag, leaving the machine still mostly covered. The now-warmed sandwiches arrived first and we had to swat away flies from them until he brought over the drinks, at which point he rested his wrist on my sandwich (leaving a large indentation) to put one of the coffees on the tray.

It was not any busier than any other Costa we'd been to, yet tables inside and out were almost all covered with trays of dirty cups etc. When we finally found a free table, it was coated in crumbs and sticky dried spilt coffee. During our whole visit, we saw two staff members clear a single table each without even attempting to wipe them down afterwards despite visible food and spills. With this in mind and the plague of flies, I can only imagine how poor the hygiene standards were behind the counter. My husband and I ended up sitting outside to get away from the flies.

Will most definitely not be returning to this Costa, and I would actually highly recommend that people avoid it if they want to avoid the risk of...

The coffee as always great!! The food was good. However, I don't mind doing trace & trace because I think its really important, but if you don't have a phone with internet you're in for a poor visit. You HAVE to do track & trace on line there or you won't be served. I asked about taking my name & number but the staff member was really offhand & not helpful when I said my phone couldn't do what they were asking. I went to one side to try and go on line but couldn't. Eventually, another staff member who was very helpful, came up to me with a laptop and took my details. So then we could order. Rude staff - tall overweight man lacking in personal hygiene patronising younger staff in front of me and other customers. His body language was quite aggressive. He specifically shouted my order in the young lads face three times in a condescending manner - he looked ready to quit.

There was a high amount of flies in the Costa. Customers sitting in were constantly swatting them away.

Rude staff member ultimately made my coffee and it was vile. Also not even what I ordered. I didn't feel safe (on my own) to challenge my order due to his behaviour. Ending up chucking the coffee and getting another one from somewhere nearby.

This Costa runs on chaos.
