Dog friendly, that's the reason for the two stars, it's not the food or the service. Scamming the soft drinks, glass of coke/IrnBru was half ice with massive chunks taking up most of the space, that amount of ice is whisper close to trading standards reporting territory at £3.50 for a small glass. Classic Caesar salad was mediocre, the pre-prepped from M&S is much better at half the price, these guys want £12, which is way over priced, adding chicken costs another £6 which is a scandal. Pan seared squid was perfectly cooked, all THREE bits of it, however it came swimming in chilli oil which would be OK if they gave you maybe a slice of dough bread to mop it up, but nope that's an extra £5 again and a bigger scandal than the added chicken. Pricing is comical considering the food is middling and the service is just basic, for these prices I expect my cutlery set for me not handed to me in a paper napkin. Clearly they're trying to capture the Loch Lomond tourism money which which might work in high season but not May. Overall poor value for middling food and basic service, but if that's what you're ok with just go to Wetherspoons and at least get cheap drinks.

2025 - Our third visit to The Sugar Boat. Unfortunately we only had time for a coffee (and a whisky) this time. Our server was friendly and the coffee delicious. My husband really enjoyed the Lagavulin 16 yr old. Staff forgot the flavoured syrup in our coffees but quickly resolved it professionally and with an apology which we appreciated. These things happen. Wonderful cappuccino, by the way. 2024 - This is the second time we have enjoyed a meal at The Sugar Boat. The staff are so friendly and offer exceptional service. The food is delicious. The scallops were outstanding. Lovely decor. We will definitely be back again on a future visit to Scotland and perhaps take advantage of staying at The Sugar Boat for a night or two as well.

Sugar Boat is a hidden gem recommended in the Michelin guide. With a simple menu crafted from a handful of ingredients, the dining experience is nothing short of delightful. The dishes served here are not only delicious but also showcase the chef's skill in elevating the flavors of each ingredient to perfection. Moreover, what makes Sugar Boat even more appealing is its affordability. Despite offering top-notch quality, the prices remain reasonable, making it a fantastic choice for anyone looking to indulge in exceptional cuisine without breaking the bank. You get to savor great flavors without having to worry about an exorbitant bill. Sugar Boat promises a memorable culinary journey that will leave you craving for more

Unfortunately the worst experience we’ve ever had in a restaurant! We had booked a table for my mum’s birthday and stated in the comments that we would have a pram and a voucher to use. When we arrived the woman at the door greeted us however she kept looking in the pram and said “oh THAT doesn’t need a high chair” sorry my son doesn’t require a high chair and also just ask his parents if he requires a high chair and please refrain from saying THAT. I also would’ve requested a high chair in the comments when I made the booking. So not a great start to lunch! Where we were seated was fine and plenty of room. When we ordered food my mum asked how the mussels came and the waiter replied “in a white wine sauce with sourdough and fries” so my mum ordered that. When the food arrived the mussels didn’t have any sourdough, my mum asked about the sourdough and the waiter replied “it doesn’t come with sourdough would you like some?” My mum was obviously confused. The waiter then had an attitude because my mum had asked for sourdough. From there the service went from bad to worse! The food however was absolutely delicious and so fresh! The only positive about this place. Once we finished our meal we asked to see the dessert menu. We then waited 25 MINUTES to order, we had to eventually call the waiter over who again had a terrible attitude! The restaurant wasn’t overly busy so can’t understand why the service was so bad! I think because we had a voucher they felt as if they didn’t have to make an effort. Just so disappointed that this is the place we took our mum for her birthday. Won’t be back again....

My mother and I went in today to get a coffee.

Some points:

  1. The coffee was bitter;
  2. I asked if they had any syrup for coffees as a like a drop of vanilla syrup in my latte - I asked this in a couple of different ways but the message wasn't understood - I still don't understand where the confusion lay;
  3. The man that brought our coffee was rude, mum and I both thanked him and smiled however there was no response. We were made to feel unwelcome;
  4. A couple sat next to us, waiting to be served, I noticed the same staff member clock them come in but he continued petting another customer's dog rather than come over. Eventually the customer stood up to order them and before he got anywhere the staff member came over and then took their order...why wait? Also got their order wrong and didn't provide sugar.
  5. The waitress who we settled the bill with was very pleasant, the only redeeming interaction in the place.
  6. Also, I was sitting looking in the mirror behind so I could see what was going on. After the staff members (various) petted the dogs that came in, they did not wash their hands but handles food - obviously this is a concern.

Overall very disappointed, I had read good things but I...
