Check-in was a bit chaotic as it has to be done in the restaurant/pub section, which is not easy to do when 1. there is a queue and 2. No social distancing is taking place and there is a bottleneck at the entrance. We queued up then managed to squeeze past someone and stand in the corner until a barman noticed us and checked us in. It was 'self check-in' so we basically had to make our way through the restaurant, upstairs and to our room where the key was in the lock. I would recommend a better, safer check-in method. Our room was clean and cosy, although the window looked directly on to the pub garden and everyone could see in as well.
Due to how busy it was we were also told we needed to make a reservation for dinner, but there was no space. As guests of the hotel we found this a bit frustrating and would have appreciated being told about this in advance. Thankfully a kind lady managed to find us a space at the last minute. There was a specials board which we were not informed about, and only found out after ordering our food annoyingly. But credit where credit is due - I ordered the steak and ale pie and it was the best I ever had.
A notice outside advertises Sky Sports being shown here. When I asked about a football game on Sky, a lady told me they didn't have it. When I asked a second person, he told me 'he didn't know anything about football' (which doesn't matter - I just wanted to know if they had the channel or not). I asked a third person who said they did have it and would put the game on, but he forgot about it. Finally I asked a fourth person who confirmed this and did put the game on for us to watch although we had to wait for a space in the pub section to watch it. I would suggest staff are updated on what channels they have on their TV when showing live events.
Overall it was an ok stay, nothing special. but well located and with good food if you can get a table! I would also recommend that the owners get a card machine that enables tips...
Read moreOK, before I start a rant, let's get a couple of things straight: The, what I will call the bar manager isn't to blame here and was seemingly embarrassed by what happened (so a thank you there), and Whilst busy, the establishment wasn't overcrowded. So, to business..... Having arrived in Callander for a 2-night stay, we wandered about a bit and looking for a bite to eat dropped into The Waverley to see what they might offer. Success, ir so we thought - one of my party us gluten-free and they had a gluten-free menu! So we ordered, and my partner, who is the gluten-free member of the party, ordered the steak meal with the jacket potato and a side of veg. Dinner arrived, and whilst overall not the best, she spotted onion rings on the plate - bear in mind here, she is gluten-free. She immediately questioned the "chef" who had served the meal who said they were indeed gluten-free (so no alarms, or so you think), and continued to flap about with sauces (she ended up with mayonnaise as an aside). Meal eaten, noting it wasn't either the greatest or indeed the hottest meal she'd had, and she began to feel symptoms of gluten intollerance! She popped to check with the chap we have called the bar manager, who seemed to go a funny shade of pale and went straight to see the kitchen staff. The upshot of that is the onion rings did indeed contain gluten; way too late now of course, but at least there was an admission of guilt as it were (thanks again to the bar manager) and the charge for the entire meal was refunded (again, thank you). Luckily, my partner doesn't suffer immediately bad symptoms, but this could, of course, have been a lot worse. So, in summary, avoid this establishment! Whilst front of house staff do care, it is clear that the catering team haven't got a clue what they are doing, and sadly, that drags the whole...
Read moreCame in for lunch with 3 others on Wednesday the 21st of July. This was our first time being here and were looking forward to it. Inside was nice and were seated quick. I had ordered the lamb burger which looked nice but unfortunately for me it had chunks on onion in the patty. I'm not a fan of the texture of onions so apologised and asked for something else. The waiter was perfect and was happy to help. The manager then came over and her attitude and service was absolutely shocking and appalling. The manager began arguing with me because I had asked for a steak pie instead to which she said "I am not willing to give you anything with onions in it". She then said after I had said that I was sorry for the bother but I didn't know that there was onions in the lamb patty the manager abruptly said "well we're not exactly going to put every ingredient on the menu". After I had then explained that it was not allergies it was a preference for the texture and was not able to pick out the onions of the burger. To which I got another abrupt response. At this point I was beyond angry and disgusted at the level of service that this 'manger' conducts herself with. I had complained to our waiter about this issue and it turned out that the manager was his mother and he was left to apologise on her behalf. We heard nothing more from the manager but over heard her complaining to the other members of staff about our table less than 15 feet away from us. Can easily say that we won't be returning here after...
