If I were writing a review about the west offers in terms of food and refreshment I would be saying the place was a nice oasis in the east of Glasgow that serves very nice beer and very average food. My partner and I have always enjoyed heading here for what we regard as our local.
However, this was pre covid. The occasion post covid post lockdown is very different.
We were very much looking forward to enjoying a pint in our local pub and had even arranged to reserve a table in advance. £30 seems a bit steep to secure your table but we wanted a pint more than we were bothered about the pricey deposit. We even gambled a month in advance. To be fair, the West did return the deposit just over a week after we had visited. Even if it appeared they had set their phone to voicemail at one point (no calls getting through) and they dont reply to voicemails when you do leave one neither.
The weather was quite wintery on the day we were due to visit and we had asked in advance (on the day) what would happen if it wasn't suitable weather for sitting outside. We were told to wrap up and take an umbrella. This was not a joke and we were told that the deposit would be kept if we stayed away because we had not cancelled outside of 48 hours. I doubt they will but I really think this policy should be revised. It can hardly be described as reasonable if no protection from the elements is offered to its customers. The West has made no provision for hot or cold weather with its courtyard or beer garden. There are no patio heaters, windbreaks, shelters and its very open so you will feel the full force of the weather. To suggest that drinking in abysmal weather is in any way to be endured and enjoyed is frankly humiliating. No beer is that good. And if its a sunny day, then there is no shade to protect you from sun stroke. Important when your only option is drinking outside.
The tables in the beer garden arent even level. They have a considerable slope to them that dont leave you confident that your beer wont topple if you leave it.
Using the app is tedious. It worked for the first round. Then not for the second, nor the third. The novelty had worn off by this point. Teeth chattering and our pints becoming a chore, we had had enough. A summon of a taxi and we were out of there. Whilst we have enjoyed many pints, this could very well be our last. The lack of compassion or humility from an establishment might have just been enough to keep us away for good.
To be fair, our server Charles was as friendly and an engaging as he could possibly be and the door person (gate person?) was refreshingly light hearted too. But there's something about the bar's ownership that makes it feel a little too conceited. Not something that lends itself well to a...
Read more10/8/25.Unfortunately,the myth of my first visit was totally destroyed this evening in a comedy of errors resembling a new episode of Fawlty Towers We said then we would return for a Sunday roast dinner. Staff seated us at a table, I then approached the bar with my table no. and ordered 2 lentil soups followed by two roast beef dinners.I paid full bill by credit card and retired to my table. After a long wait my friend asked how long does it take to serve soup. In all tonight we had 3 different servers. We asked one girl about our soup. She said"Did you ask for it as a starter" cos if not it will all be brought out together. I showed her the menu where soup is listed as a starter. Its a basic principle of restaurant practice. Starter- main course-dessert. She repeated, you should have said when ordering. I disagreed. Immediately, i suspected what was in store but worse was to come. The whole shebang arrived together, again not immediately. There were no spoons for the soup, no bread, no butter. I complained again. They all arrived separately at intervals. The toasted bread for the soup came, one side toasted, bit burnt and the other side not. Where on earth do you get a toaster that toasts on only one side(see pics).Meantime as suspected, all our food was going cold and nearing the end of our meal, it was indeed stone cold. For all of these dubious pleasures i paid £45. I spoke again to a male staff member stressing my dissatisfaction with the whole shambolic experience. We received the usual obligatory meaningless apologies and were told the old post covid chesnut, they were short of kitchen staff. We left in disgust having been offered no recompense of any kind. I regret not asking to see a manager. Such a shame cos it's such a nice place and food would have been fine with the exception of the Yorkshire puddings which were undercooked and doughy inside, if only it had been served correctly and more importantly HOT😡. It will take something special to get me back there. Dining out is not cheap these days. It should be a pleasant experience.🙄 This was anything but. Cold comfort ...
Read moreDO NOT go here if you're looking to experience German food. If you've been to Germany/austria before and enjoyed the cuisine, do not go here and expect any sort of german food. We go to germany/austria twice per year and this was not german in the slightest. The inside of the restaurant was decorated nicely with some random german nicknacks. First, service was slow for a 3/4 empty restaurant . We ordered the schnitzel stripes to start - what arrived was a small dish of 4 chicken breadcrumb strips, served with garlic mayo. Cooked fine, but about as german as a kfc. No salad or garnish, and no cranberry sauce or mustard. For the main, we ordered the pork schnitzel and fries, and the schnitzel sandwich In a pretzel bun. The schnitzel and fries turned up just like that....a chicken in breadcrumbs with some fries. No salad/garnish/mustard or cranberry sauce. The chips were nice and the chicken was cooked well - but it's brewers fayre type food, not german. The schnitzel burger thing came with fries which were cooked well and the chicken that was cooked well. However the way it was seasoned was typically British. It was served with 1 lettuce leaf, a tomato slice and a gherkin slice. Again no cranberry sauce or mustard or horseradish etc. The pretzel bun is likely straight from lidl (which is fine) but it was cold and should have been warm or toasted. Also to top it off, when I asked for mustard, I was served english mustard in a sachet. This place is the furthest thing you could get from german food, save for a couple brattwurst. The food is average, probably a 3, but I've given a 2 as the placed alludes to the fact it serves german food. I was last here in 2019 and ordered a large german platter which was good, and more in keeping with german cuisine. I think the new chef should spend some time in Germany. Genuinely disappointed. See attached photo of my food from 2019 which was good and no longer served.
Oh and I was charged 55quid for the pleasure 😂😂 poor. Please remove all indications of serving german food and be honest - it's British food with a couple items...
