Signal Box Cafe — Restaurant in South Hams

Had heard good things about the breakfast, but after now experiencing it for myself, improvement is needed.

My partner and I both had the "super" breakfast and neither of us enjoyed it.

They say everything is cooked to order, yet sausages were pre cooked and kept in a hot hold cabinet. Meaning they became dry and cheap tasting. Eggs had a metallic taste, which when trying to eat actually made me gag. Toast felt like it was still bread and spread tasted cheap too.

Also paid extra for mushrooms and hashbrown. Was completely put off eating the rest of my breakfast when I found a blonde hair in amongst the mushrooms. Told a member of staff, who was looking panicked as she watched me sift through to find it again and not a single care was given. Was not offered a refund of any sort. Total cost for 2 people including tea/coffee £25.70. Will not be returning!

Bit of friendly advice: Invest in some hair nets!

In response to your response: I didn't say I "thought" I found a blond hair, I said I "DID" find one. I couldn't find it as it had obviously got caught up among the beans. Blonde hair, tomato sauce= blended. I also never said it was value for money either. There was no apology made what's so ever, and as a foodie who loves a cooked breakfast, I would not have left anything on my plate (regardless of taste). Finding a hair in my breakfast was the reason I was put off eating they rest. I do not tend to leave bad reviews, unless it's absolutely warranted. Today was my first time of visiting this establishment. So start with the pros… great location and a beautiful conversion and repurposing of an old signal box. There was a reasonable selection of items and food appeared to be cooked to order and the pricing was fair. The

The drawbacks: Service at the till was quite slow but what I will say is that this seemed mostly to do with how orders were being passed over to the kitchen which felt a little disorganised. Might have just been a busy spell when I visited so I’ve not marked that down too harshly, as I note other reviews speak highly of service and to be fair whilst a little slow, the guy on the till was incredibly polite and customer focused.

One thing I would like to see is a better air conditioner or more of them, or even fans to get a bit of air movement - the portable one by the till wasn’t coping with the heat which made things rather uncomfortable - but I accept it was a rather hot day compounded by the heat coming from the kitchen. But I think diner comfort is something to consider for hot days.

Would I go back again? Yes! It wasn’t perfect today but much better than the average and indeed better than some branded outlets found...

I find it difficult to tolerate the older blonde lady who is employed there, as her lack of trust in me creates a sense of discomfort when I attempt to place my food order. However, I must acknowledge that the quality of the food remains satisfactory. I appreciate your response, although I must express my disappointment in never having experienced such discomfort when requesting substitutions or expressing willingness to pay extra for additional items. It is disheartening to be labeled as "awkward" for simply expressing my preferences. Despite this, I have always been generous with tips, even providing a £10 tip during the Christmas season, as your staff has consistently exceeded our expectations in meeting our needs. Regrettably, I personally do not appreciate the behavior of the woman who served me on that particular day, as she displayed narcissistic tendencies.
