Summary: We'd rather have gone to Wetherspoons for the much faster service, baby changing facilities and much better value.
Pros: Beautiful interior, nice atmosphere.
Cons: Late Service, some salty dishes, hugely expensive for the overall value on this visit.
We visited the Angel at 5:05pm, 4 adults and a baby; and ordered shortly after the kitchens opened. The kitchen opened at 5:30pm. We ordered a few starters which turned up quickly; then 1 Hake (£14.50), 2 x Red Braised Pork Belly with Rice (2 x £15.00), one Fresh Tagliatelle (£12.50) and Roasted Shallots (£12.90), Crispy Crushed New Potatoes (£7.80) and Tamari Chilli Greens (£7.90).
The Roasted Shallots turned up first without any of the other dishes. Then our waitress came over and asked where our mains were, we explained that they hadn't arrived.
At 6:30pm I asked at the bar when we should expect them, and the waitress Claire seemed to throw the kitchen under the bus by saying "they are holding back the dishes until one is finished which takes the longest". Does a dish take approximately 45-50 minutes to make, or was our order forgotten; I'll never know? All I know is we were waiting at least 90 minutes from arriving.
My partner who had the Pork Belly said the Pork Belly was salty, and the Chilli Greens were also salty, she felt there was more salt than was pleasurable.
My pasta dish had the right chew, a slight spice and the sauce was well made; but for £12.50 I really expected a flavour explosion with a presentation to match. It was competent but quite simple.
The hake was cooked well and presented well with the courgette and caper butter, but for £14.50 with no sides dishes included, one expects a lot more.
There is a sign downstairs not to hit your head, but on the first floor the doorway (photo attached) is very low. Be careful.
Overall we would avoid this establishment, with better alteratives...
Read moreAs long as you know the staff, it seems you’ll have a good night. We walked in just for drinks, didn’t have a booking but the place was relatively empty and they said they could seat us. Staff seemed very chatty with the other customers and seemed like they knew them all/were friends. We were shown to a table upstairs which also wasn’t hugely busy but again had a few tables full that all seemed to know the woman seating us. Had menus brought to us and we checked if they wanted us to come to the bar to order, to which we were told they’d come up to us. Some time went by and one of the waitresses came to our table with a tray of drinks, we said they weren’t ours as we hadn’t ordered yet and a table behind us shouted and claimed them. Waitress had a chat with them and then left. Despite seeing us sitting there with menus still and us saying we hadn’t ordered yet. Waited 20 minutes in total without seeing a single member of staff apart from the one girl with the drinks, so we got up and left. Downstairs all 3 members of staff were stood at the bar talking and didn’t even acknowledge us walking out, not even a word as we left. Absolutely won’t be going back and...
Read moreAfter finishing work later than planned, me and my mate walked down Fore Street in Totnes looking for somewhere to eat. We walked in a few places only to be told that the kitchens were closed!! We had left it late and were just about to give up when we came across The Angel!! Even though the kitchen had just closed the staff (who were lovely) decided they could help us out. The chef popped out with a menu and went through a few dishes that he’d be able rustle up quickly so we could eat. We decided on some Hummus, flat bread, steak and crispy fried potatoes with aioli. WOW!!! The food was fantastic, the hummus was the best I’ve ever tasted, served with roasted carrots and garlic on top it was delicious, so was the flat bread topped with roasted nuts, steak and potatoes. The staff seemed genuinely pleased that we happy with our experience, a true sign of a great place. Thank you I...
