First time I have been back in since the re-vamp. It does look lovely. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I did experience some issues during my visit, which were mostly not due to staff issues. The coffee machine is not working, apparently hasn’t been working properly for a long time. Even with a coffee machine they cannot do milky coffees with any non-dairy milk. I would like if they had a proper coffee machine where they can use oat/soy/coconut milk separately to make a nice drink. The ordering system on the website wouldn’t allow me to order ‘lasagne and chips’. It did allow me to order a lasagne on its own. It did not have the option for a side order of chips. I ended up asking ordering chips with my curry, to go with my partner’s lasagne. When our food came out, my onion rings were forgotten. I did mention it to the staff and was given a refund. I am very disappointed to find that the vegan options available seem to be very minimal. They only have curry, chillie or pizza. (I wasn’t able to order the pizza for some reason). Personally I cannot really eat very spicy food so I wasn’t able to enjoy the curry I was served. And I’ve tried the chillie before which was too hot for me. I remember there used to be a vegan burger available at the Ladygrove, but that has disappeared from the menu. Previously I have just ordered the side of ‘cauliflower wings’ plus some chips, to make a meal. But there were no cauliflower wings available, and as previously stated, the website didn’t allow me to order a side of chips.
So overall I am quite disappointed with the options for vegans. It’s a shame as this is my local and it would be lovely to be able to visit more regularly. But I have no interest in going there for food again any time soon.
I don’t have any issues with the staff. They were all very helpful. I just hope that there are some more options available for me...
Read moreI was very hopeful on looking at the menu - wide choice and the food looked great but in reality it was incredibly disappointing.
I had the cheeseburger with chicken. My meal was served in a black plastic basket which looked dreadful. There was a huge mound of chips (which were barely warm) next to a fairly small burger and a measly single onion ring. By the time I managed to get through the mountain of chips they were stone cold. The burger wasn't particularly hot either when served.
My daughter had the cheese and tomoto pizza from the children's menu. At over £4 it wouldn't have hurt to have added a bit of salad or a few fries but I had to order a side of fries at nearly £2. This became quite a pricey kids meal for a five year old. Although the chocolate brownie and ice cream she had as a desert was very good for £1.49.
A friend in my party had 'hunters chicken', and although I appreciate it was ordered from the 'lighter' menu, the chicken was shockingly small. It was meant to be a chicken breast fillet but I've seen bigger chicken nuggets. The plate was bulked out by yet more chips. I guess this is where the 'generous' comes from.
I used this pub in the absence of a much needed Wetherspoons in Didcot in the hope it would of a similar standard but it wasn't a patch on Wetherspoons burgers which include a drink in the very reasonable price. The quality of their burgers for the price is fantastic.
This was my first and last visit to a Generous George and can only hope they try and learn a thing or two from their competitors...
Read moreWe had a party of 20 on a Saturday. Wasn’t to be busy, pretty dead for a chain pub on a Saturday if you ask me, anyway the reason I’m giving a poor review is for these reasons. Number one, we waited way too long, 30-40. And the chefs even forgot half of the children’s meals. Number 2 overcooked and over seasoned. I have never know any chef to season a gammon in salt that was a big shock. Medium steak was well done loaded chicken had no sauce on anything the only thing that wasn’t over cooked on that plate was the coleslaw, to me was the best part of my meal over cooked soggy chips that had been left over the hot light for the best part of 10 mins. Number 3. Giving children hot plates, this is health and safety, you do not give a 5 year old child a plate that the front of house can’t even hold without a towel. That really upset me. You want to charge people £40 pp for a Christmas meal for family’s, and you try and scold my child and over cook all of our food. Your chefs should be ashamed, to be honest I hope they won’t be cooking people’s Christmas dinners because that will spoils a lot of people’s Christmas. The reason I’m not giving a one star is for this reason, the front of house gave us a full refund and even shouted at the chefs. I’m totally greatful for that. I hope the best for the generous George, but me and my family wont...
