Went along on spec on a Sunday mid-late afternoon, having seen it listed at the top spot in Newcastle Chronicle's best fish and chips list a few months back, even above Shields' 2 well-known Colman's restaurants. This we had to try, and despite the competition, it didn't disappoint!!! Cod and chips meal is £12.99 and you get mushy peas, bread and butter, tartare sauce and a pot of tea all included so good value for money. Haddock meal was only £1 dearer. Delicious all round and large portions on very appropriate fish-shaped plates. We didnt need to eat again for rest of the evening! They also had some very tempting looking desserts. It wasn't at all busy, which surprised us, (although it was good for us as we had a pram with us) although it got a little busier towards the last hour with people squeezing in an early dinner. Did not explore the whole place, but I think there may have been more seating upstairs. Nice fresh modern decor and friendly and helpful staff too. No specific parking as venue is in a pedestrianised zone, but Oyston Street car park or Asda are only a short walk away, and it's directly opposite the Metro and bus interchange. Be aware, it's not for evening dining though - open 11am til 6pm Mon-Sat and 11am-5pm Sundays. We will...
Read moreThis is a nice fish and chips restaurant in the town centre and close to travel links.
The counter staff inside are very friendly and informative, and the waiting staff are very efficient and courteous.
The meals are quite generous portions and good quality. The fish and chips are good quality, crisp chips and flaky cod with crunchy batter. The quality is high, but we've had better tasting options elsewhere. Perhaps this is due to their choice of potato and fish purchased rather than how they're cooked. The veggie hamburgers are also quite large and good quality, albeit a little dry and needed sauce.
The restaurant is in a convenient place, but inside it feels cramped and noisy. The tables are too close together and a clash of noises from the kitchen can often be heard. This is perhaps acceptable for a quick meal, but not somewhere you would want to stay for very long. Seating options outside are limited too.
Frydays is a good place to eat, but eating out maybe a better option for those who want a more...
Read moreI visited Frydays fish shop & restaurant in South Shields, opposite the new interchange and we decided to go for a coffee, we took our seats and waited up till 25 mins to be served! I then walked to the door to ask can we be served and the staff were standing and chatting behind the joint counter, I was told okay two minutes,I sat down to find two woman walked in and ordered 2 tea and fish n chips but were served immediately, when we got served the reason for lateness was that they were doing uber eats and we never saw any one from uber eats arrive for delivery, when we got our coffees there was no saucers and no spoons, and no sugar, we had to ask for these. However the day before we did the same but I feel that staff were on their toes was because the owners were in house and all was well. And serving was kept at a min of a few mins. I can o ly give 1 star for this but I hope things change when...
