2 Months ago it would have been a 5 star kind of place. The pub itself is lovely, food a fair price and normally a decent but realistic selection of choices.
We are big fans of the sun special burger... Choice of mac and cheese, pulled pork or Bolognese filling with the normal pattie. Best part was the home cut chunky fries, kind that mums used to make but alas it would seem no longer. This set the place apart from others.
Recently the chips have become a basic fried chip in either chunky or french fry style. This is more similar to wetherspoons and isn't the same. The chef has changed the salsa to a relish which just ruins the food. It's too spicy and just too dry, as if over spiced when made. I was told by staff this was the head chef's decision but why fix what wasn't broken?
We have come on various nights and normally go on busy ones like quiz monday or on a normal friday. The place does events during bank holidays etc. I find Tuesday and Wednesday although quieter to have less staff on. Food does take a moment and seems to have less quality on these days? Perhaos the chefs are different?
In terns of drinks theirs plenty to choose from and members normally get a discount on specific ales or drinks. We don't drink often so cannot comment too much on the tastes of the ales but those I've tried are unique.
Finally and this is just a suggestion Table numbers wouldn't hurt. You have to try and explain where you are sat when ordering and on busy nights that feels like trying to give directions to another part of town. The staff are lovely and I feel it's a small sinple change which would really aid them...
Read moreVisited for the first time on Friday 13 July 2018 after seeing it's entry in the Good Beer Guide. The place is situated just after the traffic lights on the road in from Newport ( A518 ) on the northern side of a busy Lichfield Street. If you turn immediately left just after The Sun as though your are going towards the multistorey car park the narrow lane will take you to the rear of The Sun where a gap in the wall will take you into a small car park. The car park appears to have only 10 spaces in it.
Alongside the car park is a large covered wooden decked area with tables and seats plus more outside seating at the rear of The Sun. The rear entrances lead into the main building. A well stocked busy bar is on the left of the building , ( from the rear,) with a great range of Titanic Ales plus guest ales. There were nine real ales on offer, all sensibly having their colour indicated by a sample of each in a small specimen bottle at the bottom of each handpulls. All the beers were also listed on a nearby chalkboard with price and specific gravity listed.
We decided to have half of a dark guest beer Bridgehouse Brewery Porter (4.5%) reasonably priced at £3.40 for a pint.It took quite a while to get served as the place was very busy but the quality of the beer meant it was worth the wait!
On leaving the car park you have to turn left as the lane is only one way. If you follow the lane it brings you out back near the Newport Road traffic lights.
The Sun Inn does food although we did not eat while we were there . It looked to be reasonably priced British food when we...
Read moreI have to say I wasn’t impressed with the Sun inn (use to be really great….), it was early evening, so it wasn’t like the staff were rushed, not many in the restaurant. We waited along time for our food to come out from the kitchen, the bar staff just placed the food down and left, there was personal touch, no one asking if we wanted anything or say hope you enjoy the meal, they just left and went back to the bar. In most restaurants at least someone comes to see if there are any issues……beer is definitely the focus here. The food you would expect for the prices paid, to be of high quality but the fish and chips was shocking, chips were over cooked and were not fresh and were hard and just tasted of oil, beer batter fish, didn’t taste of beer as stated in the menu, the batter wasn’t cooked in side and this to just tasted of oil, very dull meal. My wife had stake and asked for medium rare it came out well done? It was just disappointing, i have been had the sun inn before and the food has been really good, it just seems no one is checking the quality of food coming from the kitchen. I know business try and save money but, if no one checking, the personal touch and quality benched against price, brand and reputation are key, you are just letting yourselves down and your good reputation. Sorry but I wont be eating here again unless...
