Iâve been Drinking in the George and Dragon for over seven years, and itâs always been a place Iâve loved - lively, welcoming, and full of characters. Sadly, the past few weeks have marked a sharp decline under the new management.
While Iâll give credit where itâs dueâthe pub is noticeably cleaner than before â But the atmosphere has taken a serious hit. Removing the live DJs from Friday and Saturday nights was, in my opinion, a huge misstep. Those nights used to be buzzing, full of energy and regulars. Now, it feels empty and lifeless. If they want to introduce live singers, why not trial that midweek instead of gutting the weekend vibe?
Itâs also starting to feel like the pub is being steered toward an âold manâs pubâ model, with little thought for the younger crowd whoâve kept the place alive for years.
My recent visit was especially disappointing. Despite the bar being quiet, I waited Nearly 15 minutes to be served. When I politely asked how long it might be, the landlord snapped, âYouâll have to wait like everybody else,â in a tone that was frankly patronizing. Iâm 38 years old ânot a childâand I was mortified. When I was finally served, the landlady â believe her Name is Lesleyâ poured the wrong drink, and when I corrected her, she slammed the glass down and walked off Into the Back. I was then refused service by the Landlord for being âawkward.â It was shocking and upsetting.
Whatâs more troubling is the apparent pattern in staffing changes. Two young Black bar staffâwho were always friendly and welcomingâare no longer there, and the 2 DJs of colour have also been let go. Itâs hard not to notice whoâs being pushed out, and itâs left many of us feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome.
This used to be a place where everyone felt at home. Now, it feels like the heartâs been ripped out of it. I truly hope Amber Taverns listens to community before...

Read moreBack in the mid 1970's an early CAMRA Good Beer Guide said Cheadle is a real ale drinkers paradise .." beware only of the George and Dragon." Only ever been a handful of times. Used to have a " reputation." It has had a few re-vamps and is now a very pleasant and well maintained bar. Most importantly selling real ale for Paulicarus. Lovely pint of Courage Directors. ( A long gone brewery but somebody still brews this beer. An all time favourite.) Excellent pricing as well. Taylor's Landlord and Titanic Plum Porter plus Westons cider off on this Tuesday after a busy weekend. Good beer garden. Big downside for me is the multiple TV's and loud music. Even a big TV outside...but great for...
