Just returned for a second visit to this friendly well-run pub which has the benefit of being accessible by bus and train (Rose Hill station) as well as boasting a generous car park. Trains unfortunately only seem to run until 21.00 hrs.
The pub itself is a characterful building with airy and well laid out rooms - see pictures for details. The bar offers a good range of well kept cask ales plus lagers etc. Where the Railway really scores is with its excellent food offering which appears to be home-cooked and is excellent value for money. Portions are generous enough without being outfacing, leaving room for a pud. Call in on Mondays and Tuesdays to take advantage of the two course £8.95 and three course £10.95 offers, surely unbeatable?
The Railway strikes you as a thoroughly friendly locals' pub, scrupulously clean, with a great ambienceas well as being a destination venue. Wheelchair access and disabled-friendly loo available. My only gripe would be that Robbies charge so much for beer which comes from less than five miles away, but don't let that...
Read moreDisappointing. Handily located at the end of the Middlewood Way, this place seemed like the ideal spot for our walking group to stop off for lunch. Having called in a week earlier to book in advance, AND give a list of pre-orders as requested, it was disturbing to find the place closed and in darkness upon our arrival. Only after a ten minute wait in the car-park, and ringing the doorbell, did we gain access. Then, having to queue at the bar to give our lunch orders individually -and pay in advance - took a further 30 minutes. This meant that some of us had finished our meal before others even got served. The food was palatable, although some meals were over-cooked. And being served a beef stew which was no more that a bowl of gravy with a few pieces of meat and carrot in it, and half a dozen incinerated chips, with a soggy paper serviette underneath which had to be extracted, was hardly an acceptable dining experience...
Read moreWe arrived at The Railway after a terrible experience at a pub down the road which I cannot even bring myself to name. Our experience could not have been more different, a complete and utter contrast. 12 thirsty men were welcomed in like an old friend. We were politely asked to track and trace which we were more than happy to do. We were then all asked what we would like to drink and our drinks were brought to us with a smile from quite possibly, my favourite bar staff of all time. The Moretti was crisp, cold and bubbly. Now, despite being £5.70 for a pint, I have absolutely 0 complaints for paying that little extra for superb service. A lovely establishment that we will 100% be returning to on our way back from many an away trip...
