A cracking pub with real character and charm. From the moment you walk in, you’re met with friendly faces, both behind the bar and among the regulars, which gives the place a genuinely welcoming feel. It’s the kind of pub where you can relax straight away and feel like part of the crowd.
The downstairs area is a real highlight: warm, inviting, and made even cosier by the stove glowing in the corner. It’s a perfect hideaway for a quiet drink or a long chat. Out front, the seating area is just as good in its own way, great for a sunny afternoon or a relaxed evening watching the world go by.
The cask beers are consistently excellent, always served in perfect condition, and it’s clear that the team take great pride in their connection with the local CAMRA branch. Around the pub, you’ll spot all sorts of trinkets and curiosities that add personality and spark conversation.
All in all, The Samuel Oldknow is one of those rare pubs that gets everything right: great beer, great people, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that keeps you coming back.

It was mainly male orientated, though it was a beer bar with craft ales, so you would expect that. Even though I felt slightly intimidated by all the blokey, blokes having a good time, they all seemed quite friendly. I don't visit many ' straight' bars now, but this generally felt ok. I wouldn't have liked to do a pirouette to try that out but it seemed 'gay friendly '. And I do put that in my pub reviews now, especially as one recently visited establishment was most definitely not. I would go again anyway and have a few more beers there and if I do, then I...
Read moreOpened in 2016 (I think) by two local men who wanted to showcase local brewer's products, ciders, and to have a different vibe from the traditional pubs that have been the mainstay of Marple for a century and more. Small bar set on the pedestrian shopping street in Marple centre. Narrow, but there is enough space and seating to be comfortable. Overspill seating is available in the basement along with access to outside drinking area for better weather. A great asset to the town and has been a success from the outset. Highly...
