I haven't been to Brightlingsea for years and was stunned to see the waterside developments with grand-looking apartments overlooking the tidal river. The sky was grey and overcast and the tide was out which made it a bit dismal looking, but one house on the front stood out with its timber frames and topped with a windowed turret and a beautiful weather vane, but gargoyle-like at each corner of the roof was a red stone dragon looking as though they were ready to fly menacingly over you and cover you in fire. Right next door is the inviting Coach House Coffee shop which tempted me in to warm up with a large frothy latte and a generous portion of carrot cake which was gorgeously soft and gently spiced with a creamy topping. There weren't many people walking around the town on this particular Wednesday but there was a steady stream of customers many of whom seemed to be repeat visitors. Read moreI would recommend for ice creams but not for food. We have just eaten there, bacon and brie panini was awful. Both myself and my husband had to pick most of the bacon out as it was just thick pieces of fat and was a funny brown colour. The panini was hard and came out several minutes after the rest of the food. Very disappointing child's menu. We had to actually ask what they did for children as it wasn't on the menus we were given. Staff were pleasant, but didn't check to see if all was OK. I feel very disappointed as the reviews are...
