Probably the best pub in Appledore.
The Beaver Inn is a small traditional pub with an amazing atmosphere and mouth watering menu. We are renowned for our fantastic fish specials and for the friendly service that we offer. Enjoy watching local talent? The Beaver Inn plays live local up-beat music every Saturday, we host the Marmalade Club (which is essentially an open mic night) every Sunday and on Mondays we host local acoustic artists (and one Monday a month we host North Devon Jazz Club). There is always something fun and exciting happening at The Beaver Inn!
The Beaver Inn has been in existence for over 400 years serving the local fishing community and tradesmen from the new world (America). Many people ask us how we got our name “The Beaver Inn”, as the pub is so old it is hard to say exactly where the name came from but we do know that The Beaver Inn is where the Press Gang used to gather sailors that they were pressing into the King’s service. The Press Gang wore beaver pelt hats so the pub soon became known as the place of the beavers. It is well known that Appledore and Bideford used to be massive trading ports where goods would be traded with the new world (America). These goods included ceramics, tobacco and also beaver pelts so it is likely that the name for our pub, The Beaver Inn, also derived from this. When a Captain brought a ship back from the new world, there was a big problem with crewing for the return journey as they feared that if the crew were to go into Bideford they would never be seen again. Consequently, the Captain would offload his crew at The Beaver Inn and the women of Irsha Street would bring their home-brewed beer and entertain the men whilst the Captain and a skeleton crew would sail down to Bideford and carry out their trades before returning to Appledore to pick up their crew for their...
Read moreWe'd visited the day before & had had a drink on the way to walking to Westward Ho! It appeared friendly & is in a good position for views, therefore we decided to walk back down the next late afternoon/evening for food & a few drinks. We arrived just in time to order food before they had a gap before the evening food began. The food was lovely, hot & plenty of it. However, as we were sitting enjoying more drinks, we were asked to move because the table that we were sat at had been booked for 10 minutes time for another group to eat. That was fine, but they could have put those people at a table for 2 rather than make 4 of us move, but we moved to a table that the staff had said was available & it was fine. We had a couple more drinks & thought that we would stay for the live music. However, they same bar lady came & told us that a booking had just come in & we would have to move again. 1 minute later a man, came up & in a not very nice way, demanded that we move as the other people were already in the bar area, whilst we were getting our bits together he was clearing the table, essentially shoving us out. The pub was, by this time quite busy, but they did not try to find us somewhere else to sit, therefore, instead of having a nice evening spending money over the bar & enjoining the live music, we left, quite upset (in an angry way, not crying) about the way in which we were treated. I feel that they should have told the booking people that they were full or had at least been nice about it & tried to find us somewhere else to sit. We we're visitors to Appledore & we will visit again, but I don't think that we will be visiting The Beaver Inn again! Such a shame for our last evening of an...
Read moreOld and tired little pub. We walked in and we were totally ignored. We had to go and find a table and menus for ourselves. After we ordered we sat and waited 70 minutes for food! 70! It was average at best. If the pub was packed and we were getting 5* service we honestly would have understood, but it was quiet and no food was coming out of the kitchen at all. The brown grease from the burger was dripping down my arm and the battered fish didn’t taste of anything but oil. There was a poor man with his 2 children sat behind us. He ordered before us and was still waiting for his food as we were leaving. There were no apologies from anyone. We couldn’t even get eye contact from anyone serving to ask for an estimation on how much longer we’d be waiting.
There was an older woman floating around who seemed to own the pub (?) or was a manager or something. She was chatting to everyone (except us and the other man, obviously). It seems that if you’re a local this is a nice place to chill. If you’re an outsider prepare for the worst service of your life from a...
