Battyes Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Wakefield

We, as a family, have been going to Battyes for years and my sons from down south always cannot wait to have a meal there when they visit.

However, yesterday and it was purely our fault that we had gone out for the day and Battyes had closed their restaurant but the takeaway was still going to be open for another hour. We drove like a bat out of hell from Normanton and got there in plenty of time to order our meals. There was a young man doing the frying and a very rude teenager serving.

We asked if we can sit down and would clean up after ourselves which we did. All our chips were gritty and sandy and lukewarm. The mini fishes were more fishy than usual and my boys picked around it. I thought, grab the bull by the horn and bring this to her attention. She was having none of it and so I asked her to try one but the small woman from the restaurant stepped in with her input and gave us a scientific lessons on how the chips are washed,chipped and ready for the fryer. I think because we had gone near closing time, they have dredged the last lot and fried them with grit as well. It was disgusting! We were starving having saved ourselves all day and actually binned the meal and condiments to the value of £33 and drove to KFC up the road.

They said that they would never come back which is a shame because it is always on form and very good value for money.

I think you should retrain the young girl serving on customer relations and manage a smile. If looks...

I was appalled by the lack of customer service I received when I visited around 6pm today with my Father.

Was queuing in the take away section for some food. My Father needed the toilet as he has a weak bladder anyway. He went into the restaurant and a lady in her 50s with short hair didn't allow him to go to the toilet UNTIL he pointed out we were customers.

He then complained to me and I spoke to the same lady and her response was to tell me it was not a public toilet and it was for customer use only. After I got my food, I had asked to speak to the Manager. The said 'Manager' had said the same thing. Not even an apology. There is absolutely no customer service in this place at all and no 'common sense'. My Father is elderly and needed to go to the toilet and he was prevented from doing so. Surely this could have been seen as a one off occasion. My Father has never used the toilet as a 'public' one and this is the first time.

Please can you review each situation as it is very upsetting for my Father who speaks very limited english. Your staff need extra training in customer service. also if you keep deleting my comment I will keep...

Hi guys….well we all like a deal don’t we….especially Yorkshire people…..this restaurant stands back from the road looks like a new building …this was our first visit today.but without daunt will be the first of many.on arrival I looked at menu….which surprised me.big selection of home made food………we only went for the fish and chips we didn't know or expected such a Vared menu….any way I had the large cod ( but they do offer a giant cod) and my wife had the plaice only going to say a few words and that is ‘out of this world’ not only was the food here the same has what you would expected from ‘the Ivy ’ it was better and a lot cheeper…..ok it was a little more expensive then your average fish and chip shop ( they also have a takeaway at side) but your get what you pay for here a lovely clean well kept modern restaurant.with first class friendly service.the staff will look after you here guys.and the owner/chef will not only cook you first class fish and chips which were fresh on the day……..will charge you very...
