** First off - prices are different on the website than in the restaurant. I was a slightly miffed at this but it is what it is. The menu on the website needs to be updated!
Booked a table here on a visit to Tenby as it came so highly rated on TripAdvisor. Arrived slightly early to my reservation but a lovely host took me to my table anyway. Drinks order was taken while I perused the menu. Nice restaurant, simple décor and well lit ambience and not a place for a wild night out, more 'date night' and calm. Nicely decorated toilets, clean and tidy.
Lovely sounding menu, apparently known for their big portions and they weren't wrong! Even though I was by myself, I really fancied the vegetarian sharing platter. I jokingly asked the waitress if she'd judge me for ordering it to myself and she was a great sport, no judgement and told me I could have leftovers boxed up to take away with me anyway. I asked without the garlic bread as I wouldn't eat it so didn't want it wasted, and she very kindly offered to swap it out for a side, so I had onion rings instead which I thought was great service. Food took a little while to arrive, not so long as to complain though.
Looked great on the plate, if slightly greasy. Yes, I ordered basically all fried food but it could've looked 'drier' I think. I was provided with a spare plate too in case I needed it. Food was lovely, so much cheese involved in the veggie platter but I wasn't complaining! Again, slightly greasy but still lovely flavour and a huge portion even for a shared plate. The sweet potato chips were perfect. Lovely to have the accompanying dips with it as well.
Alas, I did not have leftovers … what greedy girl! I even asked for the dessert menu. That did tickle me. As you can see from the picture - it's just a till receipt with the desserts written on them. I suspect, that as the restaurant is known for it's big portions, desserts are simply not a priority. I ordered the chocolate sponge cake. Well presented, but given the speciality of the mains, I would put good money on the desserts simply being supermarket bought, dressed up slightly. This could've been one of those microwave pudding pots easily. Still tasted good, and it's great they have the options there for those with a sweet tooth or 'dessert stomach'.
All in all a nice experience, would recommend for solo diners as the staff are very friendly. It's not perfect, I don't think it's quite a five star rating as there are better places/options around, but nothing to complain about at all....
Read moreBillycan is not an easy place to fault. The food was absolutely delicious, with a sufficiently wide but well chosen choice of meat and fish options. I cannot fault them on the presentation either, nor the quality of service provided. The food was well presented and served by staff who acted like they loved working there.
I visited in the time of Covid-19 and can verify that they were also acting much more aware of the risks than other Tenby restaurants, with some amount of additional safety measures in place.
The food is not extremely cheap (but hardly unreasonably expensive for a meal out) although in Billycan's defense the portions are extremely large. Really extremely large. Larger than almost any restaurant I have been to, ever. Even things you might expect to be lighter are large. I spent all day working up an appetite walking beforehand but a half a starter, a main course and a dessert was still too much for me. I might suggest that a starter, main and dessert would actually be more food than any ordinary person could eat in a single meal. I think that I heard everyone within earshot around me say they were absolutely stuffed and too full for dessert whilst we were eating.
The fault that loses Billycan a star for me was the continuous playing of rather distracting television in two corners of the room. Where we were sitting there was no possibility of not having these within our field of view, and they would be continually visible everywhere. As far as I could determine they were not showing anything anyone would be interested in, just 'background' television.
Anyway, overall it's a lovely restaurant, particularly if you're looking...
Read moreI visited this restaurant on the Tuesday after Easter with my brother, drawn in by the appetising food pictures on Google Maps. The setting was modern and the staff, friendly.
We chose the Billycan platter for two, featuring a generous mix of small burgers, fried chicken, fish, chips, and beef. While the quantity seemed satisfying, I began feeling bloated after a few bites, which I initially attributed to the portion size. Unfortunately, my discomfort escalated into persistent vomiting and symptoms of gastroenteritis after returning home to London that evening.
Compounding this, my brother, who traveled to Bath post visit, experienced identical symptoms throughout the night and the following morning, ruining his day as a tourist.
I only dined here once, so I can't speak to their usual standards of hygiene. But it's disheartening to report that our visit was followed by such severe gastroenteritis symptoms, suggesting a potential issue with the food quality that day.
Overall, 2 stars just for the modern environment and friendly attitude...
