A family group of seven of us booked for dinner on a Monday evening, following a graduation at the Uni that afternoon. The welcome was friendly, shown to our table, given menus and told what was not available – quite a few items as it happened but no worries, we all found something to our taste. The garlic mushrooms in a creamy sauce to start were probably some of the very best I’ve ever had. Several options of burgers, fish with chips and peas and we were all sorted. We didn’t try any desserts. ||||Somehow, they had a very low stock of bottles of red wine. However, an offer was made to run up the road and acquire a few more, which we accepted. True to his word, Paul was back in just a few minutes and the Malbec flowed once more.||||Now, for me a bonus, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea, was half a dozen chaps arriving with musical instruments and starting playing. It was like we’d suddenly been transported across the water to Dublin! I guess it's the Celtic blood in me but I absolutely loved this, which was later in the evening. Their rendition of The Gaol (Last of the Mohicans theme) was absolutely outstanding. No amplifiers or stage, just very impromptu and relaxed.||||This wasn’t our first time here, previous occasions were for a Sunday Roast in pre-Covid days and again no complaints back then either. Paul (and I think the lady is Steph), thanks for a...

Read moreI hate having to write these reviews about venues such as the Boatyard, but unfortunately, these sorts of venues don’t help themselves. This pub was once owned by one of the local gangsters of Bangor, but their grubby paw prints are all over this place still. The girl who is running this place with her partner is well out of her depth and it clearly shows. They are covered head to toe in tattoos, swear all the time in and around guests and I could of swore I saw a joint next to her packet of cigarettes. Her partner is quite an aggressive guy and can’t handle criticism well, so don’t even try. I think to be honest, it’s probably best to avoid this place, I predict it will be closed within 12 months, with yet again new owners, as the present one doesn’t even look like she could run a bath, let alone a place...
