I thought about leaving this review for a while now and firstly I don’t want it to come across as an attack as it isn’t it’s just an idea that could potentially benefit the restaurant, so here we go. Whenever we got to Hay on Wye we always go to the Red indigo as it’s the only curry house in Hay and the food is great. First and foremost, let me say that, the food is always great. But the service is really where the restaurant lets its self down. Very, very young staff who clearly have no confidence in talking to customers or no guidance on how to interact with the pubic. And if I’m being brutally honest (although I could in all honesty be mistaken) only got the job because they are pretty, I say this as it was the only quality the serving staff displayed, it certainly wasn’t due to there prior experience, confidence, initiative or situation awareness. While we were there a massive table of ten got up and left due to how long the service was taking this was literally just for the staff to come and take a drinks and food order, dispute the table asking to place the order, they had been there longer than us and we had to wait 20-30 mins to place and order, so I can understand the frustration, plus other than us (2 people) that table of ten and maybe one or two other tables the place was dead, so it wasn’t as though they were rushed off their feet. I noticed that the restaurant was advertising a job stating no prior experience needed, I think this is where the restaurant is making its mistakes the cooking side of things is strong but the service is very weak and what it really needs is someone to lead and show the younger members of staff how to go things, even just greeting on entry ( which didn’t happen) and not just standing behind the bar not looking up in order not to lock eyes with a customer. So in summary great food, I’d highly recommend a takeaway. But there is room for improvement on...

Highly disappointing restaurant Staff seems to be polite yet overwhelmed with the amount of people they had so the service was exceptionally slow .

That's not really a concern though .

The food is where iam putting my first review ever for any restaurant around the world . Highly misleading and worst bangladesi attempt to cook north western Indian frontier cuisine . Every thing mentioned is iconic but done in the worst manner where the chefs have no clue what that dish actually is .

Being grown up in Delhi and living in london over the years I was not expecting much but this was below beer and Highly disgraceful.

Half baked tandoori Roties . Chicken balti . Balti sauce is iconic rich tomato based with high content of kasuri methi . It was like a indo chinnese tangra balti instead with sugar and worst gravy with cornflour .

Paneer saag . My days stopping calling it that .

Sugar and 70 % coconut dedicated and 10 % spinach . It was a laugh. Lol why

They had no clue and I don't blame them that's too much of bangladesi influence on north Indian food .

They can surely do better . I'll suggest the boss to visit some icons around in uk like potli in london .dhishoom gun powder and all . There always time to...

DON'T EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE ANY ALLERGY. ( I have a nut allergy) I would rate no stars. Three of us went to this restaurant. As soon as we sat down we said that one of us has a nut allergy and stated it was all nuts. The waitor took our order and said that all of our curried what we ordered didn't have nuts in. When the food arrived my curry smelt slightly nutty and creamier than what I would normally get at home. I asked the waitor if it had nuts in and he replied no no nuts. Then just after the manager came over and said that my curry did have almond poweer in. They were very casual and said it was a mistake. And he told the others to 'enjoy' that nut curry while he made one without nuts (which I was still reluctant to eat). Luckily I hadn't eaten any of it as I would have gone into a full anaphylaxis shock. The restaurant didn't seem to think this was a big issue, we still had to pay full for our full meal until last minute when he said he'd knock that curry off the bill. If I ate this curry it could have killed me. Awful service and no...

To summarise in one word, dispointing! We as a group of 8 arrived promptly on time (18:30 on a Saturday) and had to make our way to our table. We then had an half hour wait until our drinks/dinner order was taken. We tried to attract the attention of staff but was ignored. We all ordered mains with sides which took over an hour and fifteen minutes to arrive. The food was mediocre and had clearly been sat under a heat lamp for some time. We didn't dare order dessert or more drinks due to the long wait. The manager even had the cheek when we asked for the billed that 'if we aren't in a rush we can wait for a waitress'. For one round of drinks and a main with sides took 2.5 hours. I rarely give places one star, however they really need a wake up call. We could have easily spent twice as much if the service was present. This was honestly the low point of our visit to Herefordshire.

If you are used to London’s “Indian fine dining” scene then you may find this restaurant wanting. However, be reminded this is Hay-on-Wye and all things considered this is not bad at all. Dishes are hit and miss so choose carefully. For starters the Tandoori Mixed Starter was good (3.5/5), and the samosa crispy (3/5), suggest having these both with the mint yoghurt dip which adds another dimension to the flavours. For mains the Lamb Karahi with the fluffy and flavoursome garlic naan is a good option (4/5). Saag paneer does have a milder flavour but still ok (3/5). I would steer clear of the Tarka Daal - normally a firm favourite of mine, but this dish is as bland as it gets. Drinks were also disappointing with coke being flatter than a pancake. On a positive note, none of the dishes were oily, social distancing was good and the staff were polite and service prompt.

Friendly staff. Relaxed calm Atmosphere. Great food and good value what more could you ask for apart from more poppadoms! Me and my fiance went here for an evening meal on a Saturday evening, it was relaxed and quiet when we went and we were served very quickly and our order came out quick too. The staff were welcoming and friendly making sure we had everything we needed! The food was hot and tasty and they had a good variety to choose from. Starters, mains, sides and a drinks menu too. Toilets downstairs.Wheelchair and pushchairs would find entrance a squeeze but could be possible if sat near the front. Outdoor seating. Don't take bookings just arrive whenever..
