The food that my partner ordered was decent although the service from the blonde woman that served us at the counter was appalling, she seemed annoyed that we had even dared to order food, we weren't made to feel at all welcome and she was so rude that in the end I chose not to order any food. I think if you expect people to spend money in your establishment you should at least have the decency to be polite when you serve them.
In response to management's comments on my review:
It would appear from management's responses that we will be going back and forth for the rest of eternity :'D
This place has always been and always will be my go-to place for food in Hay on Wye. For us as a vegetarian / vegan couple it has many advantages. It's one of those stop off places on the way back from, or to, the south of Wales that we see as a 'treat' when we need a break in the journey. We also eat there pretty much every day during the 'How the light gets in' festival. The last time I ate here (about two weeks ago), I was close to starvation, having walked all the way from Pandy (17 miles) without any breakfast or lunch (don't ask why!) and the staff and manager couldn't have been any nicer to me. The food portions they served me were amazing (I love my food). The round table in the back room was literally full with plates. The manager was extremely apologetic straight away when an item on the menu was no longer available, and offered me a free side salad and some veg. I was so impressed with the service I asked to speak to the manager to give her my thanks and regards. She then proceeded to invite me to her husbands 'gig' at the weekend. I don't understand why anyone can complain about such service. The staff have been nothing but polite and courteous at all times to myself and my partner. See you in a couple of weeks for...
Read moreLanded on this place after scouring the town for a breakfast place in the pouring rain. It looked promising and they seem to specialise in food. I ordered the Welsh Breakfast and my partner scrambled eggs on toast. It was end of breakfast service so I clearly got served the dreggs of that. Welsh breakfast consisted of 1 burnt sausage, cold, brittle hard bacon, fried eggs that were the consistency of hard boiled eggs, some slimely tomato, a mushroom, a very tough piece of black pudding and some greasy brown bread. It came with tea which was a teabag in a cup with no where to put the spent teabag. There's an element of contempt to serving food like this to tourists knowing you aren't relying on them for repeat business. I was ravenous so I ate it not wanting to wait another half an hour to have it sent back to the kitchen and return again. My partner's scrambled eggs and side of glamorgan sausage looked decent. Such a shame the kitchen thinks its acceptable to trot out food of such a low standard. Someone in the kitchen knew what they were sending out and sent it anyway. ...
