The Blue Boar is an adorable pub with incredible food. Not sure who the chef is, but they really know how to cook! I got the Soup of the Day (which was a winter soup made from parsnips, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and more) and it was creamy and very tasty. It came with a freshly baked baguette that was hot and chewy inside and just slightly toasted on the outside. Loved it! My two friends got the Cuban sandwich, which was INSANELY good. Tender pork and a generous smothering of Dijon, Swiss, and Mayo made the sandwich SO juicy and delicious. Great flavor and a hot toasted bun. We also got a side of very hot and crisp chips that we enjoyed. The service was very friendly and fast, our food came out in ONLY 5 minutes! Really recommend this pub. We went there not knowing what to expect (as we were visiting the town for the first time) and were very pleasantly surprised! Go to the Blue Boar!

We walked through the main pub to find a gem in the back garden. A Family of 4 ordered burgers. Home made and mostly we really enjoyed. One burger was very rare as per picture, our teenage daughter can't eat anything rare and left the burger itself. When we gave some feedback the guy was not impressed. We were not rude just said if they're sending them out rare maybe check, as we enjoyed but not everyone does. He said he couldn't have sent it or rare because of the bacon. No bacon In site, nor was it on the menu, kind of a non answer. It makes no odds to us as we're not local, we were not after our money back and won't be returning anyway. Id say go, but not if you want a non rare burger or a polite answer to anything raised. Id have given a much higher score if not for this. The back garden was very pretty and good music.

This was recommended to us by a local and we weren’t disappointed. It’s got a nice blend of oldy Worldy pub vibe with more modern outside marquee area... We arrived just before dinner but were able to order after 1730. We were greeted and helped quickly. Our drinks orders were taken at the table and delivered but we found it easier and quicker to order the rest of our requests at the bar which was fine. The food which was slightly on the dear side came out pretty promptly and I wasn’t sure what to expect. We ordered the burgers on the menu and to be honest I was really impressed. It was one of the most tasty burgers I have had in a while and was delicious. It was worth the money. Overall a decent pub vibe in the lovely setting of Hay on Wye.

Avoid at all cost! 45 minutes to wait for food when it wasn't busy and kitchen staff sat in the pub having their break before they started our order. Do not take our order at 11.35 if staff are not going to start cooking until 12pm. This kitchen is NOT run by a chef but a couple of ladies with tea clothes thrown over their shoulders who at best may be a cook who should leave their skills in their own kitchen. The Nachos for £8 was made with mince and a few beans thrown in, not a hint of cumin or any mexican flavour to it, where was the salsa or the guacamole? What a rip off! mince and the nacho chps. The bacon and brie bap was the worst I have ever seen, the bap was so soaked in oil it looked like fried bread and after one mouthful I could not eat it. I had to send it back it was totally unacceptable as for the nachos my husband insisted on eating to avoid a confrontation. We felt so sorry for the poor bar tender he was struggling by himself in the front & in his defence he did offer an alternative but the evidence and lateness of the food we just wanted to leave and find somewhere else to dine. I can only conclude this place is only open by the grace of god of having unsuspecting tourist falling for the same trap as us of a cutsie pub in the high street. Left feeling very disgusted...

Blue boar came well recommended. Looked like a nice menu. Not cheap but looked value for money because of the quality. Sat down and happily ordered a few light bites from the menu - 3 sandwhiches and a jacket potato. No mention of the kitchen running slow.

No food appeared at all from the kitchen for over half an hour. Upon enquiring when the food would be ready as we'd been waiting that long for quite simple to prepare food, the answer that was given was "It's coming now. It's coming now". I was interrupted and no apology was given.

When the food was then brought, I asked if the side order of chips was coming as well. This was answered with "I know. I know"

On returning, the chips were slammed down in front of us by the same waitress. Again no apology for a 35 minute wait for was effectively light bites.

It's a lovely pub, great for a drink but if you want food, from my experience leave a good while before eating and then don't hold your breath for any sort of good customer service during it.

I understand how it works. There are often unforseen circumstances that lead to food being delayed. I get that. But the lack of apology, information and the way we were treated by the staff was just...

Ordered "Home made" Lasagne. Ate 3 bites. Lasagne is made with pasta sheets, ricotta cheese, mince & sauce which are repeated until pan is full. What I got was 1 pasta sheet on the bottom & Shepherds Pie fillings with cheese on top. Was told "No one else has complained, Madam." Then "chef" brought out a plastic takeaway with another portion. Said there were 4 layers of pasta. Said they "Bulk out their Bolognese with celery & other bits otherwise you'd be paying £20." His customer service attitude was worse than Gordon Ramsay on a tangent. I asked if he needed my money so badly that I had to pay £12 for 3 bites of salad & 5 chips. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY EATING HERE!!! They don't care if your meal is crap --REHEATED FOOD IN PLASTIC TRAYS! His idea of a compromise when I asked for a refund was an offer to make another meal. Who is thick enough to let someone do that? God only knows what other "Special Ingredients" would've found its way into something...
