For over forty years this restaurant has been a favourite in the Welsh capital. Whilst the location has moved in the recent years, the food has always remained as good as it’s always been. Showcasing the finest Cantonese food in Cardiff. So this Sunday evening I took a good friend along to indulge and enjoy. For starters we had the veggie spring rolls, chicken and sweetcorn soup along with the scallops in deep fried batter. Prawn crackers are mandatory as anyone will tell you. They're always nice and fresh. Mineral water and soft drinks, no alcohol this evening. The fantastic Yung Chow fried rice always satisfies and tastes amazing. It had pork, chicken, prawn and veggies. When you had a touch of soy sauce, the taste is divine. Roast duck with ginger and spring onions and traditional roast duck were the mains ordered this evening. The duck was flavoursome, tender, crisp skin, sweet sauce hit the spot. The ginger and spring onion dish was also very tasty. Staff are always courteous, engaging and uber efficient. We enjoyed the rice so much, we ordered another portion. No service charge is added to the bill, so we tipped generously. Highly recommend.

Had our first takeaway from Riverside Cantonese and won’t be ordering again. We ordered satay chicken skewers, spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken, vegetable noodles and beef and black bean- this came to £37.20. A lot more expensive than other local Chineses, but we hoped that would be reflected in the quality- it was not, the food was average and overpriced. The satay chicken was chicken skewers in a watery curry sauce (see photo) and the spring rolls came in a portion of 3 (for £4.50!). The main dishes were better than the starters, however the batter on some of the sweet and sour chicken was stodgy and the meat inside was dark meat which looked unappealing. One positive is that the food arrived hot and packaged well. To top it off, the delivery driver- knowing we were paying cash- didn’t bring any change. Not a huge issue but we ended up paying £40 for an average meal and didn’t even receive any complimentary prawn crackers! Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend Riverside Cantonese for takeaway, there are better priced local Chinese takeaways offering similar, if not better, quality food.

Highly recommended restaurant for authentic Chinese food. Food is great with full selection of traditional dim sum on the menu and Cantonese dishes. Restaurant itself is a nice modern setting with a clear view of the kitchen and there’s plenty of spaces for small or large groups. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Have visited Riverside for years, the new location is far more accessible with parking at the rear with disabled spots and accessible for disable/wheelchairs. This place does get busy so recommend booking in advance.

The manager and staff at door were extremely rude! Will never come here again.

We used to love Riverside Cantonese. It always had such a warm and friendly atmosphere. We hadn’t been for a few years now and decided to grab a takeaway this evening.

No welcome on arrival. Greeted by the rude waiter.

The restaurant doesn’t offer contactless, and the gentleman who served me immediately got very rude and frustrated because I hadn’t brought a card with me (I usually just use Apple Pay on my phone). He walked off to find his manager to see if they could offer alternative bank transfer options.

The manager then came over and didn’t say hello or anything. He stood over me while I scrambled to sort out a bank transfer. He watched me and looked at my account, and gave me 0 privacy in setting the payment up. I put the details in, which flagged them as incorrect. I mentioned this to him, and he questioned if I had put it as a business account. I replied I hadn’t, and he replied WELL, IT IS A LIMITED COMPANY, DUH!!! I’ve never felt so belittled, considering we were paying customers and ordering over £55. His body language and tone were aggressive the moment he walked over.

Honestly, I left feeling totally put out at how rude they were. I'm always super polite to catering/retail staff as I know how demanding and stressful the role can be.

DO NOT EAT HERE, customer service is so much more important than good food, and both are lacking. Restaurants like this will close if they continue treating paying, polite...

The original Riverside Restaurant was opened by George Thomas, speaker of the House of Commons in the 1970s. I was introduced to it by a friend from Hong Kong, and loved the place - becoming a regular visitor in the 1980s and 90s. Now a less frequent visitor to Cardiff, we decided to seek it out. It has moved to brand new premises not far from the Cardiff City soccer ground in Leckwith Road. Parking was always problematic at the old site, but the new one has its own car park. Even on a quiet Monday night the spaces were near full and the restaurant lively. Some of the staff from the old place are still there. I’ve been astonished to find some less than enthusiastic reviews; we found the quality of food to be excellent and good value, though the menu is less extensive than in former times. Service was courteous and helpful. The wine list was a surprise; house wines are followed by French, some highly priced. Further on some very good new world wines can be found at reasonable cost. I suggest no hesitation about visiting, but booking is recommended and early arrival if a parking...
