This place looked amazing on Google reviews, and after a lovely drive into this beautiful town, we were very optimistic.
Our visit started well with a lovely entrance and appealing food display. However, we were disappointed to find no tables downstairs. In hindsight, we should have left at this point.
We were directed upstairs, where we began to notice the quaint charm giving way to a much dirtier atmosphere. It started with a kennel cage at the back and wall-to-wall dirty carpet. In this day and age, no food and beverage establishment should have carpets, especially if they allow dogs.
Upstairs was even worse. It consisted of old, mismatched, and tired fabric sofas. Nothing matched, and everything looked grim. My wifeโs instincts were telling her to leave, but I insisted we stay, still remembering the appealing food from downstairs.
We ordered warm food and a couple of soft drinks, though our spirits continued to sink in the unappealing surroundings. This place has enormous potential, but it needs serious renovation.
When our food arrived, it was pleasant but nothing special, certainly not reflective of the entrance and display. As we were about to leave, my wife noticed foil on the floor. Upon investigating, I discovered what appeared to be an ancient, mummified leftover jacket potato. If it weren't for our dogs, it might have remained as a historic artifact for future patrons. Even our dogs refused to eat it, which says a lot.
We quickly departed and spent the next hour dealing with bouts of dry heaving at the thought of what we had found and the overall cleanliness.
To the owners, I wish you every success, but please, please gut the upper floor and start again. This place has so much potential with just a small investment and some...
ย ย ย Read moreWe visited the week of 31/7/23 we enjoyed about 3 hours, I love tea โ chose my favourite lapsang Souchong a nice smokey flavour and they have a great selection of other teas and coffees, it's busy all the time and a very relaxed atmosphere, they have a huge area upstairs for seating with a mix of old sofas, chairs, tables etc, it's great to sit and read a book without a barista smashing the coffee grinds out every 2 minutes, the staff are very positive and busy very busy, if you want to chill and chat this is definitely the place, the homemade cakes and and food is really nice with portions enough to choke a donkey, there's plenty of space downstairs too in the shop area it is a hub in the village and I can go on about the food excellent, or the choice of tea, coffee, dairy free milks, dairy free lattes for the kids, and the prices are affordable/reasonable, the toilet is clean and also the tables are quickly cleared and cleaned, there's plenty of room to chill out and have a conversation without feeling like someone is listening, my only downsides are the building inside and out do need painting and the window display looks like the same one as 12 months ago and there's also a fine collection of dead wasps on the window sill upstairs which I found amusing ๐ and only a single toilet but don't let that put you off, having said that if it does put you off there's a Costa in the Spar shop enjoy, please use cash and tip the staff support a friendly business with nearly 20 years of being in the village (I seem to have lost my photos ๐ญ I took, so here's the only one...
ย ย ย Read moreIf I could give this place 0 stars just like the food hygiene rating I would. Absolutely disgusting and clearly no effort to try and fix the problems found in August 2024. On first arrival this cafe looks qwerky and interesting, but when you start to look a little closer the shelves are covered with uncovered cakes, the floors are coated with a thick layer of dog hair on the mouldy old carpet and sofas were worn tired and falling to pieces. I would have happily walked out but my son had taken a liking to a rocky road cake and we had promised him a treat, choosing to overrule my instincts I went to the counter to be greeted by a rude and impatient waitress. We asked if they had any dairy free options of cake and the immediate answer was 'no'. A blunt response at best. But then she decided that 'oh actually is the flapjack dairy free?' she asked a coworker. I decided not to bother. Goodness knows what's going on behind the scenes to have worthied a 0 stars hygiene rating but I wish I had realised before we ordered. It was only upon stepping outside we saw the rating tucked away in the window and I was awfully tempted to go back in and ask for my nearly ยฃ15 back for the 3 cakes but we decided instead the throw the cakes in the bin round the corner and not bother causing a scene in the (for some reason) very busy cafe. What a disgrace to a lovely little town, this place should not be allowed to still be open with such low care for health safety and wellbeing of...
