The Gauntlet Pub — Restaurant in Warwick

Leaving it late to book a place for Mothers Day meal for a family of 7, I booked this place late the day before, going off reviews and descriptions. Upon turning up there was not 1 car in the carpark which made me dubious straight away. The pub looked very untidy and run down outside. When we walked in the pub my impression didn't change....drab, dreary, old and a very flat atmosphere. Their were only a few people in the place. The reason became apparent. My son turned 18 in February and was looking forward to having 1 drink with his mother for his first time on Mothers day. We showed a copy of his ID, this apparently wasnt sufficient. But I pointed out licensing laws permit I should still be allowed to buy him a drink if we were eating and they believed he was 16. They conceded they believed he was 16 but it was their discretion and they didn't want to serve me. The way I was treated was disgusting. Both owners were rude and very blunt. They obviously did not want our business. This became apparent to me and due to my apprehensions mentioned earlier we left. Fortunately the day wasnt ruined. We went a short distance to the Queen & Castle and had a lovely afternoon and lovely experience with no such problems spending £200. From my observations I cant see this place being in business...

Had to wait for ages at the bar as barman was busy on his phone. When he notice me he gave the impression it was all too trouble some, put my change on the bar rather than in my outstretched hand and forgot to give me one drink which he'd left under the pump as he returned to play on his phone and we had to get his attention again to retrieve it. The food prices have gone up by a third and the portions have shrunk somewhat so we've stopped having a midday meal there. The tables are not cleared of empty glasses and it looks like the hoover must be broken. While the piped music was good (jazz) it did not feel a welcoming or friendly place. Visited on the 15/2/20. The place was clean and tidy. We met some friends for drinks and after some time decided to eat. I decided on the special of the week which was a 14Oz pork tomahawk steak, it was nothing short of perfect, my girlfriend had the southern fried chicken wrap which again was perfect and they dont skimp on the portions. Having just launched a new menu, I found it full of variety and choice, something on there for everyone's taste and budget. If my girlfriend was writing this she would fully recommend the waffles that they make fresh in house, with various toppings available she says they were amazing and better than some places that "specialize" in desserts.
