This is a lovely little pub with a true, 'village community' feel. Fantastic interior decor, full of quirky objects, books and pictures. Very friendly and welcoming staff, free WiFi, decent drinks and meal menu. Plenty of seating, both inside and out, with a lovely, garden area for enjoying this amazing summer. 2 hour free parking in immediate vicinity, but spaces fill up quickly. I believe they have other parking available for their hotel guests? Be prepared to share your space with lots of dogs...today I counted 11. That said, I recommend this great little venue. UPDATE: Whilst this little pub remains a true 'hidden gem', my visit today (09/07/2021), left me a little astonished. I ordered a pint of Peroni and was charged £5.95 for the privilege!!! In my local pub the same beer is £4.85!!! A difference of £1.10 per pint!!! The whole country is struggling to cope with the results of this pandemic and the hospitality industry has complained endlessly about the pressures they find themselves in. So this pub's answer is to charge almost £6.00 for a very average beer? Nice pub, great location... seriously damaged pricing structure. Still recommended, but avoid the Peroni. UPDATE II. I am in the middle of eating a huge slice of humble pie. The reply I received from the owners, was truly one of the best I've ever read. Far, far, too often, we, the public are never acknowledged for our reviews. Today, The King Alfred placed that problem, firmly on the back burner. I want to thank the person who replied to my review. I want to update the price of Peroni from £4.85...to £5.05...and I want everyone to ignore my previous update.

Had my BNI networking group christmas meal here for 28 people! It was warm and vibrant and the service was friendly, quick and the food went down very well. Minimal waiting time between the first person receiving their food and the last. The chocolate brownie with ice cream, walnuts and a side garnish of berry puree was very good as was the brisket. I'm very particular about my brownies so you can trust me that it was amazing! So moist! My partner and I were very excited by the Red Leg rum they had which we/me indulged in copiously! We had booked in advance to stay here too and it was very comfortable and modern considering the classic feel to the rest of the pub. My only criticism is that the standby light on the TV (room 2) was very bright during the night and kept me awake somewhat... however I did have a lot to drink (as it was also my Bday!) So that could have well been a factor! Overall highly recommended on accounts of food, service, comfort, decor and rum! =)

The quality of the food is excellent, beer was good. Goodens gold is a nice pint, Thatchers was the only draught cider. 2021 Trout with samphire, superb fish and sauce and the best samphire I've had. Not huge but perfect for lunch. For dessert, the warm brownie was excellent, sticky toffee pudding also excellent. Still dog friendly. 10% service charge is smaller than the tip I'd prefer to leave but that's their choice. Now it's card payments only. 2022 autumn update, the service charge has gone, apparently, otherwise it's gloriously unchanged. The K. A. session ale is also very good. The burger and the beef and stilton pie were excellent, the chocolate brownie was good but unexceptional. 2023 summer. Still great, and pretty much unchanged inside. The whole bream was excellent, as was the warm chocolate brownie, much nicer than last year.

We had a really enjoyable stay here whilst attending the national hospital radio conference at the University. We were impressed from the very start, the pub is in such a lovely, pretty area and looks charming from the outside. We had a warm welcome despite our arrival being in the middle of a busy Friday night it was no trouble at all. The room was absolutely wonderful and beyond my expectations for a pub. Lovely, cosy decor and the bed was even comfier than a Premier inn and that's saying something!! Lovely touch to have good quality biscuits, tea and coffee on hand and my partner really enjoyed the granola. The bathroom was lovely and clean and a great size, with a lovely powerful shower. Despite some other reviews we were really surprised at how quiet the room was. We are night owls anyways and stayed out until after last orders. It soon quietens down after that so we had two great sleeps. The staff are an absolute credit, making us feel at home and were really friendly and great to have a laugh with. We had two lovely meals as well and some great wines and Thatchers which was very well kept. Pies are awesome and the Sunday roast was something else. 👌 Yes it's not cheap but you certainly get great quality for the price which is appreciated. We would love to come back to Winchester to explore some more and will be sure to stay here again....

This used to be a family pub, but since it has been taken over by new management it is certainly not now. We booked for four adults and two 20 month olds (which we made clear when booking). It was obvious that the woman in charge was not happy with the toddlers running up and down. Now we were not letting them run a-mock we were watching and following, in all the years we have frequented this pub, this has never been a problem. However, the lady in charge came over to make it clear, via a passive aggressive exchange with the toddlers, that they were to be seen and not heard. We felt so uncomfortable afterwards that we left without pudding or after dinner drinks. The same lady also had a go at a member of staff in front of us and then later apologised to this member of staff, also in front of us. We eat out at least two times a week in Winchester and over the country and the world in fact and this is the most uncomfortable we have ever been made to feel with our child. It's not the pub it was in terms of being family friendly and I would not recommend for those with children under 6. If they don't want us there, they really should say! We...
