This is an incredible historical building. Inside, there's the famous Round Table linked to King Arthur's legends, which is pretty impressive. The size of it seeing it hanging up on the wall is astounding. It really brings the legends to life when you see it in front of you.
It's like stepping into a history book but cooler. You can almost hear stories of kings and important stuff that happened here. The stained glass with the names of the kings is amazing. The painted wall with names of those in parliament is awe inspiring. I also loved seeing the gates which were specially made for Diana's wedding with their initials carved on the top.
If history's your thing, it's a gold mine. But even if history doesn't sound interesting to you, the Great Hall is stunning. The architecture is a mix of strength and elegance that's just beautiful. It's definitely worth the entry fee.
Visiting here isn't just a regular visit to a museum. It's like getting a real feel for England's past. It's a chance to see, learn, and appreciate how amazing this...
Read moreThe Great Hall is a fairly large medieval hall which used to form a part of Winchester Castle, which was demolished on the orders of Oliver Cromwell in 1649. The Great Hall is the only surviving part of the castle, which was initially built by William the Conqueror in 1067, following his victorious campaign in 1066. The Great Hall was built by Henry III between 1222 and 1235. Hung on the interior of the Great Hall is an imitation Arthurian round table, which has the names of Arthurian Knights painted around its periphery. The Picture of Arther at the head of the table is, allegedly, a depiction of a young Henry VIII. There is a lot of history in the Great Hall, only a small portion of which is represented in this review and it acts as a museum, an appropriate use for this magnificent building, which was used as late as the 1970s as a court house. As part of the ancient city of Winchester, which predated London as the Capital of England, it is well worth a visit and is highly...
Read more5 stars for the ancient structure and round table which has more of a genuine history than you might imagine given the round table hinges on Arthurian legend. Both hall and table are seriously old (check the Winchester Round Table in Wikipedia). Both the hall and the round table are seriously old. So why only 3 stars? Simply that if all you are interested in is the hall and round table (the garden is of minor interest) then you get charged for the hall and one of the museums which sours the price. If all you want to do is show your kids the round table it will cost £28 as a family ticket which is shocking. It wasn't always like that looking at reviews as recent as 8-9 months ago. 1 year ticket validity is a ploy not mitigation. Buy your tickets on entry and decide if what you see has enough value given the...
