This is a beautiful and qaint little pub. I've been coming here on and off for over 35 years. However, last night was the last time.
My partner and I had been out walking all day and we were freezing cold.
I was in pain due arthritis so we decided to call in as the pub is on our way home and we knew the fire would be lit.
I sat on a small stool by the edge of the fire to warm up, which I always do if I sit by a fire in a pub, as I'm conscious of not blocking the heat from the rest of the pub.
I also pulled up a small stool for my partner to sit on by the other side. We were not blocking the fire or any access to the gents.
The barmaid came over immediately, before my partner even had a chance to go to the bar.
She had a big smile on her face, so i assumed she was going to greet us. Instead she told us we were not allowed to sit by the fire.

We were so comfortable and welcomed that we stayed for the...
Read moreThe Hyde is a country pub in the town. Decent beer, friendly staff, dogs welcome. It's close to the station, and it's one of those places you'll visit once and be hooked. Unless you're after Sky Sports and a fruit machine. Then you'll be disappointed. They have live music and an annual beer festival and, although they don't serve food, you're welcome to bring in a takeaway (or have it delivered to the pub). They charge £1 per head for this privilege, but that gets you plates and cutlery. If you like a proper pint in a proper pub, full of proper people, this is the...
Read moreMagic. Special pub in old wooden floors and oak beams building. Smashing beer garden. Real ale - plenty of choice, old favourites like Flower Pots and ever changing selection of returning favourites and new stuff.
Couldn't find a more convivial place. I've always loved that everyone gets equally welcomed, first visit, not been for ages or long time regulars.
Live music in the cellar - quality stuff, especially for such a cosy venue. Regular acoustic/folk singaround and things like that.
Not able to get to Winchester much these days, recent visit a...
