It's not really a change. Vegan food should be fresh, inspiring, seasonal, locally sourced and different.
This place has the opportunity to really 'be the change' but instead just does what is easiest for their target market - buy in premade, mass produced soya slurry made in China, ship it half way across the world on a boat powered by diesel and serve it to your customers as a burger or as coconut cheese on a pizza.
This is just vegan fast food... It's not bad, but it's not, in my opinion ethically correct, eco friendly or really espousing the virtues of true veganism.
There are so many beautiful vegan dishes across the world none of which are on this menu. The menu is just 'this wasn't vegan but we've made it vegan'.
Ok now to the food;
Fried Oyster mushrooms, loads of batter, fried in old oil in which the beautiful taste of oyster mushroom was destroyed.
Pizza - the dough was a absolutely delightful, whoever made this, you are a legend - toppings were ok but the tomato sauce was just sour like it came straight out of a tin of tomato puree. The coconut cheese didn't add anything to the dish... It is just there because it is a 'vegan pizza' why? Why not just make some topped focaccias or some idli's or dosas or something?!
1/4 burger - in fairness this wasn't bad but also wasn't anywhere near as good as the real thing. It was juicy, had a great smokey flavour... The salad in the burger was just basic but ok it's a burger.
Honestly it's just frustrating how this place seems to be vegan for the sake of it without considering local producers, seasonal ingredients or 'proper' vegetable based vegan food. It is more ecological to eat local potatoes, cabbage and pasture raised lamb from Hereford than most of the things on this menu.
If you're a vegan and you're reading this, I'm NOT saying you should eat meat, but I AM saying if you really want to ''be the change'', you can do better than this. I wanted to like this place but unfortunately the unecological, highly processed food and lack of thought as to what constitutes ethically vegan food let's this place down.
Here are my menu suggestions;
Marfona potato rostis with wild mushroom sauce topped with fresh sage
Lava cakes (oats and lavabread) with beetroot cream and roasted hazelnuts
Sabic - 'Palestinian' flat bread filled with falafel, roasted aubergine, tahini paste, vegan yogurt pine nuts, salad and pickled tofu
Lentil Daal with homemade garlic pickle, rice and poppadoms
Seasonal vegetable pottage (parsnip, Swiss chard, turnip, kale) with pearl barley, herb dumplings
Ful Medammes - salted broadbean 'stew' cooked with caramelised onion, tomato, cumin and lemon peel served with sourdough flatbread
Fresh broadbean salad with mint olive oil, sourdough croutons and mixed coloured cherry tomatoes
Butter beans in a warm olive oil, shallot, caper, garlic and parley sauce with smoked sourdough toast....
I have lots more ideas and I'm not even a vegan...I...
Read moreThe owners simply don't care.
Like other reviews, I had adverts on social media and thought it looked brilliant and a cool social scene. The reality has been a headache that's dragged on for a month.
We went on a Friday night at 7.30pm and there was one other table in use on a Friday night at 7.30pm.
The food took 40 minutes to arrive, we ordered two burgers and one side of fries. Sadly we ended up with two fries and one burger, but realising the error the waiter said to keep the food. I ate a couple of mouthfuls before the waiter came back and explained the chef was happy to do the burger (that I'd ordered and paid for) but in exchange for the incorrectly delivered fries I'd started eating...
Given the wait time of the initial order and reading the warning signs, I asked for a refund, the food (pictured) is how we left it at the restaurant. I waited another while before going up to the bar to enquire about the refund.
Aiden struggled to issue the refund using a handheld device but eventually said it had gone through and would go back on the card as we'd ordered on the app.
Over a week came and went with no refund credited, so we contacted the restaurant using the WhatsApp number on the web site - the only form of communication I could find to speak to anyone.
It turns out this is the owner/manager, who has replied asking for details of the transaction/incident, which was promptly provided and some 2-3 weeks later still hasn't replied.
We re-attended the restaurant, this time the waiter was the only member of staff on site who said this was a regular occurrence and that the manager was abroad. He said the owners don't seem to care and they're being put in difficult positions with customers such as this. He contacted the manager for us whilst we were there, and when asked how he would rectify an issue such as this if it were to happen again, he just shrugged.
I think as long as nothing goes wrong, which apparently 4.7 times in 5 it doesn't seem to, then you're fine and the food looks good. Other wise, it's a soulless, uncared for joint with slow food service and strange customer service.
Appearances are deceiving and I feel for some of the staff having no way of providing a good service, especially when the chef asks for food back that's been partially eaten!
update This is not in relation to any other review left. The request for a refund was because of the order being wrong and the chef requesting partially eaten food back. Not because it took 40 minutes, despite the place being nearly empty as stated in my initial review.
We've requested a refund with the owner of TwentyTwo several times over several weeks and havebeen ignored for a month now and still haven't received a refund. We've had to do a charge back through our credit card provider. If you wish to resolve simple issues like this then please put a contact number on your site for someone...
Read morePlace was empty but granted it was a Sunday and it was 330pm. We arrived and the waitress was on a phone call, granted there was no one in. She told us that menus were on the table and to order on a QR code. She was grumpy and unapproachable. We went outside, no menus on table. Scanned QR codes. They didnt work and said the place was closed. Ordered food told that there were no wings, the waitress commented saying i dont know why they dont just go buy some from Tesco. Agreed. But unprofessional. Food came. She named all our orders wrong. We ordered vegetarian burgers they came with bacon on. She looked angry at us because we pointed this out. Took it away. Came back 3mins later with bacon removed but same burger. Person eating this didnt mind and is soft so didnt want us to comment on it but this is totally unacceptable. If it was an allergy could be in serious trouble for this. Also this is just wrong. We're laid back vegetarians but someone else may not be. She came back 10mins later with the rest of our food. Burgers advertised as two patties, but if exchange for vegetarian only get one pattie for same price. No lettuce onions in vegetarian burgers. Chips a terrible portion. Cheese crap. People eating meat said burgers were ok.
I domt understand how this is so highly rated? Staff need training. Cant ring through to anyone. Cant contact anyone with...
