I would like to share the horrible experience I had with the place. I would like to specify this is definitely not an Indian restaurant so, none of the dishes I ordered had any Indian taste. First of all, it is mandatory in an Indian restaurant to serve water, or given the option of what water we would prefer. So, when I asked before leaving why we weren't served any water the server/owner (I think due to the attitude), he said customers get angry when they serve water without them asking and he also asked us if we like anything else and we didn't ask for water. Not only did he fail to admit that he forgot, he blames the customers. In India, customers are considered as God and water is always served first without being asked. Now, speaking of the food. We ordered masala dosa which is a popular South Indian meal. The dosa we were served was thinner than a tissue paper all the way, uncooked. It looks so big but, you can roll it into the size smaller than a golf ball. The potato filling was dry as if it was taken out of the freezer and stir fried. As for the so called chutneys, they looked more like sauces but, tasted mush worse. There was mustard seeds in the mint sauce, so the combination of the ingredients were all mixed. They have no idea what a proper Dosa chutney is. Next, I ordered an erachi fry which is a kerala beef fry dish. When I got home and opened it to have with my home made Parathas, the tin box had some pieces of meat which looked like it was soaked in a gravy and left to marinate, no aroma as there were hardly masala, probably some garam masala. I had to wash off the meat pieces and recook it. The aroma, colour and flavour was so much better. My friend who had joined me, also a South Indian had the same opinion of the dosa, so I'm sure it is not an individual view. She had ordered a Fish mulakkiyathu which I again a South Indian fish curry which is full of red chili flavour and lots of oil. But, what she got was a basic Bengali fish curry. I wish I could post pictures of what it looked like and how it should actually look let alone taste. But, I shall see if I can post them on a website that will accept pictures. All I would like to say is that if you are going to serve food that is not your delicacy atleast have the decency to learn how to prepare the dish correctly before you humiliate the dish. The people who are unaware of what the dish actually tastes will misunderstand our...
Read moreWe had an impromptu visit to Calcutta 16 on Saturday night. After visiting the pub next door we headed over the road to the curry house. This was our first visit. We entered and warmly welcomed. Drinks order taken very swiftly and arrived in a flash. The menu has all the classic with a few of their own specials, that looked and sounded unique to them. One of which, despite not going for it, we saw on an adjacent table, their crispy pancake thing. Can’t remember the traditional Indian name but looked awesome with its filling. The food we enjoyed was very tasty and had their own way of cooking some of the classic dishes, which made it very tasty. The chicken in both curries ordered was the most tender pieces of chicken I’ve ever had a curry house. The curries where all of a high quality. We will...
Read moreRestaurant looked busy and we were accommodated as loyal customers. Been using this Restaurant for a while and never had a complaint. Been working away, and been a long time since visiting but was remembered by the manager which was nice. However its not how it was. Service. Ordered 4 poppadoms got 2, ordered chef special and it was awful. Dish was full of pepper and chilli flakes. Didn't shout indian herbs, spices or authentic! Dish was replaced for a madrass but the sauce was exactly the same. Didn't eat either dishes and won't be back for more in a hurry. Shame. Even the toilets are dirty now. Staff friendly and hope they can turn it around but I think a new chef and...
