My opinion of this place very different then the rest the party I was with. Four others in my company got here. Multiple times a day every year during the founders day weekend in June . They just love it and can't say enough about it. With that said while I am not an expert on ice cream, myself and my wife eat ice cream every night and frequent ice cream parlors where every we are. We have ate ice cream at just about every stop along the NY state finger lakes " ice cream trail " and really enjoy Calhoun's ice cream in conawango valley and man many more. I have even put the mint chips in the the mint chip ice cream at and ice cream factory in Westfield NY while working there as a temp for a couple days when I was younger. My point is that while I don't technically know anything about good ice cream I eat a lot of ice cream . So here we go I ordered a hot fudge Sunday with whipped topping and a coffee from an older male with what appeared to be a chef's hat on? I was told that they don't have whipped topping . That it was not good for me. Maybe there right I don't know , but I sure do like it. Is ice cream and hot fudge good for me? They also said we don't serve coffee the place a few doors up does, you can get it there. Ok maybe they just do one thing and do it well. I ordered my ice cream and walked a few doors up, and found a wonderful artsy like coffee shop that sold their own desert. Luckily my friends were all back at the ice cream place , oh and I had already paid for my ice cream . When I got back and picked up my ice cream I was happy to find that they had put it back in the freezer until I arrived. That was nice of them. Now as far as eating the ice cream goes. It was ok. The first thing I noticed was that strangely it seemed dry? As in not creamy . Idoknow? As I sat in 85 degrees weather it didn't seem to melt(at all) ? I thought that was strange and maybe I was expecting too much with it being talked up the way it was but when I say it was ok, I mean it was just ok. I have had ice cream that when I ate it I immediately thought......this is great ice cream. This was more of a huh? It was just about then that I noticed the multiple no dogs signs. Some people might like this ,but I enjoy other people's dogs and I think it would be nice to take the dog for a walk to get ice cream and sit out on the patio. I believe they have been there a long time so it must be good ice cream to some folks, but I will opt for the every day ice cream stand with a kid making minimum wage serving melted ice cream with whipped topping and a hot coffee the next time I'm in Akron Ohio. Or just any other place that has toppings that I want not...
Read moreSo here we were. My wife and I were getting some work done at the coffee shop next door, which by the way is a great place. We wrapped up and as we walked back to the car we notice this place, an old fashioned Ice Cream parlor. We popped in and my wife and I talk to the owner, got the history of the place, their made in house Italian menu and decided to pop back in at dinner. I read these reviews now and question how in the earth it rates a 4.1. Here are my thoughts. There are two businesses here. Italian pasta/pizza (award winning??) and Ice Cream. The ratings are split between the two. Ice Cream good, the food is atrocious. Never should a restaurant ever feel serving food to the public should be this. Let me be clear, it is disgusting and as a family business they should be embarrassed and shamed. Writing this review is my only recourse as the owners just seem to not care about any feedback. To give some detail here, I ordered the chicken parm. You know the one, breaded chicken, crispy, cheese melted on top, laid on a bed of pasta, yum right. I was presented with what I can only assume was a boiled wet and slimy chicken breast with a gross helping of pasta with a sauce that I wouldnt feed a dog. I cannot explain the sight of this meal. One cut into the chicken and a quarter cup of water came spilling out. It didnt look cooked and I did not take a single bite it was just that gross and frankly looked like a health hazard. I pushed it to the side and here is the interesting thing. The waitress came over and without asking about the dish just took it, came back and said I took that off the bill. Almost like it is an expected occurrence. No asking if they could get me something else, which I would have declined, but truly no recognition of their food being served and their customers visibly disgusted by it. My wifes pizza was poor at best and just not good enough to tout "best Pizza". I have a feeling this accolade was perhaps 20yrs ago. Its clear in this family business they are going through the motions. Its clear they have lost their desire to run a business. Mary Coyle would turn in her grave to know her business has declined to this. I cannot say this with more passion, do not waste your money eating here. It was the single worst experience dining I have had. From the food to the service, they should...
Read moreI have read about Ms .Coyle's passing in 2010 , and my condolences to her surviving family members. That said, I wish I had visited Mary Coyle's in the time of her life, for I believe honesty would abound . Why I am giving Mary Coyle's a 3 is simple, it's not because of the service, for my server was just fine. She was pleasant and , oddly enough, concerned would be the word I am looking for. That stops there though. Why, well this is simple enough again ; the sign on the outside says (Homemade Ice Cream) , which is something I had my heart set upon , but sadly my heart will have to look elsewhere , for the vanilla is far from homemade. The portion was decent size, especially if it was homemade , but once again Home Isn't Where The Heart is here . The price is $5.25 for two large heaping scoops and one topping. No banana , no sprinkles or anything like that one this one. $8.25 is the price to get that banana peeled and on your boat. The $5.25 is the stripped down sunade and the $8.25 is your show boat. I think you could get a really good deal on a milkshake or a float though ? I might go back and try that , this time knowing that the ice cream's home is more in line from the checkout counter at your local grocer . I do think a couple could enjoy splitting a float for fun . I also think they should allow you to mix and match more . This shoppe needs a makeover , and the starting point should be to bring it all back to the rich and creamy fundamentals of the yesterdays shoppes , honesty . Try two , just two flavors that are made with real sugar cane and pure vanilla . Low salt nuts, or no salted nuts. Real fruits like fresh peaches and other in season style gourmet apples , plums , strawberries , picked fresh daily and made with that same type of quality in thought, and heart. There's farms all around that would love to have their names part of Akron's family heritage . Speaking of Akron Heritage , what a great area to go and make a day of .Highland is fun and the people can be very friendly and...
