What a wonderful evening. Was very balmy, so we went inside but the patio can be very sweet, in the right weather... Reservations were very easy to make and they were right on schedule when we got there... I think we waited like 5 minutes.
Taylor was our server, she was incredible. So nice to find somebody who genuinely seemed to enjoy her job. She was very friendly, made some great suggestions and kept that smile and that personality up through our entire meal. Thanks Taylor!
And then there's the meal... boom. We started out with their Pate which is incredible! the Pate has a sort of berry sauce on top, it comes in a little jar. If there is an afterlife and they have food, this will be on that menu... Comes with these little ciabatta toasts... Carbs are such a wonderful thing here... we had to get some extra toast to finish the pate, ok we didn't HAVE to... This is from their appetizer menu but I could have simply had a cup of the house specialty gumbo or a salad along with the pate and been happy. Way happy. My friend ordered the ribeye special it's available on Friday and Saturday nights, I think it's the ribeye steak and then mashed potatoes REAL ONES and a vegetable.... I got the special of the evening which was a duck breast Medallion sliced with this Demi strawberry my gosh was it good sauce. A little spicy. But the taste was worth the fire.... if you like duck, you know it can be a little greasy.. this was not.. but it's still duck so it's not as fall apart as let's say chicken might be... Keep in mind, it's more gamey, but it was excellent. Swimming in this spicy strawberry glaze.
Wanted so much to make it to dessert but we couldn't, well not without an ambulance anyway... if you get a chance, try the sticky pudding... That's where we were headed but we just couldn't make, so try that if you dont hit the wall like we did! Lol.
UPDATE- Sat at the bar. Just dropped in for a bloody mary (or 2 lol). Molly was incredible. Friendly and attentive. I didn't know but if you sat at the bar they give you scones and or biscuits as a little bar treat while you're drinking. Neither one of us was hungry but it's nice to know that that's an option. But let me tell you all the goodies they put on the skewer in the Bloody Mary made for a beautiful lunch LOL. The surprise for me was the bacon. The surprise for my friend was the radishes.
UPDATE... let's start by saying from the moment we walked thru the door and we were wholeheartedly greeted, we knew this was going to continue to be on our go to list. Ian was fantastic so spot on he knew exactly when to bring what we needed and what to take away when we were done LOL. Brunch today. Which of course means Bloody Marys cuz that's almost like brunch right they had a lot of things to eat in it like bacon, celery and olives lol. I had the lobster grilled cheese sandwich for the first time and it was incredible. Such a nice balance of lobster and cheese on this beautiful toasted bread. You get an option of french fries, chips or a salad and I opted for the chips and I was pleasantly surprised. I stayed away from the salad which is usually good but I also ordered a cup of their gumbo. I'm at a table with three gumbo aficionados and they all voted yes. They each had a great gumbo story and one said that only their gumbo was better. Not that I needed their affirmation or endorsement because I really liked it. If you have the room for it squeeze it in. Then somebody ordered the Benedict they looked beautiful and two others opted for the grits and goat cheese. I know that sounds unusual but let me tell you they could not stop raving about it. And did I mention the Bloody Marys? LOL okay I know I did I just wanted to do it again. Bloody mary....
Read moreThis place came recommended and my partner and I were excited to finally give it a go. We sat on the patio, which was lovely since it was overcast and they had the fans going.
While I appreciate the concept of the dishes, they really stumbled on the execution.
I ordered the lobster grilled cheese and fries. My fries were hard, cold, and soggy with oil. I'm not sure if maybe the oil wasn't hot enough or if old fries were quickly refreshed before service, but in either case, I couldn't eat them. And they looked as bad as they tasted. I didn't say anything about them because everyone who looked at or touched my plate could obviously see the fries weren't right but they sent it out to me anyway, so I can only assume nobody cared too much.
I would have mentioned something if my fries were the only disappointing thing on my plate. But my sandwich wasn't good, either. To be fair, my sandwich looked gorgeous. The bread was perfectly toasted and I had high hopes aside from the tired looking fries. Unfortunately, the lobster in my sandwich was chewy. Instead of chopping the tail up into smaller pieces, they opted to leave it in one big chunk which made it impossible to bite into. On my first bite of each side, the lobster pulled out of the sandwich but it was too big for one bite and too chewy to bite off with any modicum of good manners. It wouldn't have felt so impressive if the lobster had been chopped smaller, but it would have made for a far superior sandwich. As it was, I ate my chewy lobster by itself, had a couple bites of cheesy toast, and left feeling hungry and disappointend. A $26 grilled cheese should blow my mind and this was just an expensive annoyance.
My partner ordered the soft shell crab special of the day. Like my fries, his crab was oily. The pasta beneath the crab looked great and was cooked well, but it was extra heavy on the olive oil and didn't offer much in the way of added flavors.
We also ordered a cup of soup to share, and that was the best part of the meal, but it was also just kind of lukewarm. The shredded cheddar in it never melted fully.
We dropped close to $100 (after tip) for two dishes, two waters, and one cup of soup and none of it lived up to...
Read moreMarch 2025 I had an associate in town for some local business this week. We decided to eat at Cappys on Broadway. We had reservations, which I recommend.
We were quickly seated and even though it was nice outside, we requested to sit inside over by one of the windows. We were quickly greeted by our server. Ryan, who advised us on the specials and appetizers. He took our drink orders and gave us some time to review the menu and catch up with eachother. Our group ordered the Fried Gulf Shrimp, Grilled Pork Chop and Out of The Blue fish special. Our drinks arrived and we got some additional time to catch up in conversation. Shortly after Ryan left our table, we were brought some brussels sprouts as a complimentary appetizer. I can tell you, I'm not a brussel sprouts fan, but these were pretty good. In fact, these are probably the first brussels sprouts I've eaten in forty years (sorry picture of this dish is when some were eaten).
All all of the food was delicious and we ordered their Sticky Toffee Pudding dessert, which is a breaded pudding in a sauce, and I recommend the ice cream be added. We split it between the 3 of us.
We had a fantastic evening and I hope that if you choose to visit that your experience at Cappys is as good as mine or better. I've added some additional videos and pictures of the food.
May 2024 This is one of the best litter secrets in San Antonio. The prices are a little higher than most other restaurants, but this one has been around for many, many years.
I was here with others in our party to discuss market strategies. Our server was. Ryan, who was very attentive, professional, and courteous.
We were seated by one of the windows on the first floor. We did not have any appetizers and just opted for a main course and shared a dessert.
I had a crusted mustard chicken, with mash potatoes and a vegetable medley. Others had scallops or chicken tacos.
For dessert, we had the coconut pie. Yum!
We could not have had a better evening dining.
I hope your experience is as...
