My Son always spoke highly of Hula Hands as being one of the best places to eat in Alaska while assigned to the 25th Airborne JBER (Ft. Richardson side). Its where he and his soldier buddies would frequent on paydays. He was right about the large portions and delicious authentic Hawaiin dishes. Bool Galbi (korean BBQ shortribs aka Kalbi) tasted fire grilled, and large poke is not only delicious but also huge more than enough for the three of us. By the way, my wife never eats sashimi yet alone poke but on this day she got caught the bug and was partkaking in the poke. The Galbi too was delicious and although I would have carmelized the shortribs a bit more, it was delicious nontheless. It even serves Laulau lol. Meals are served with sidedishes typical of plate lunches you'd get on Oahu or Big Island in Hawaii. In terns of environment, Hula Hands has the feel of a restaurant off the beaten path, where it is msinly frequented by locals, a so called "Hole in the wall" where one must try while visiting because the food is like a delicous home cooked meal cooked by granny, and served in large portions. In fact, during our meal, we were reminded of long gone Bernie's Teriyaki Chicken in Los Angeles, and Chun Oaks in Newport News, Va ( the latter is where i and my soldier buddies would go back in the 80's) Had i been stationed in Alaska, I too would have frequented Hula with my soldier buddies. I hope Hula remains in busines for a long time our next visit to Alaska. If you like authentic Hawain dishes and are in Alaska, definitely visit Hula...
Read moreThis used to be one of our favorite restaurants in Anchorage. We haven't been in awhile because their listed hours say that the Fireweed location closes at 7. Turns out that this is wrong. The restaurant is open until 9. But no matter the hours, we won't go back to this location again. Tonight, our shoyu poke tasted faintly of perfume, half of the silverware was dirty, the extra plate we asked for was dirty, the extra rice was served in a bowl that felt like it was kept in a refrigerator-thus the rice was cold, the kalua pork was half fat and the restaurant was literally freezing. We and the other patrons were all wearing our coats while we ate. The good was the teriyaki chicken (it's called something else on the menu, but it's basically teriyaki chicken) and the wontons. We used to really enjoy the macaroni salad, but tonight it was all sticky and congealed, like the macaroni wasn't cooked in enough water. We didn't bring up any of these problems with the staff, as they were clearly doing their best. (Yes, this is a slam on the staff. Clearly they WERE doing their best, they are just incompetent.) If you have to eat here, and I'm not saying that you shouldn't - it's one of the cheapest restaurants in Anchorage! - but if you do choose Hula Hands- Fireweed, get take out until after the snow has melted. Or better yet, go to the location on...
Read moreI had dinner here with my 2 kids. It was open seating and we could seat ourselves anywhere. There was a sign that said, "No mask no service". I don't think it was being enforced because the server wasn't wearing one. We wore masks and took them off when we got our drinks. There was only 1 employee working in the front and one person cooking in the back. Only 2 people running everything.
We had spam musubi and fried wonton for our appetizers. It didn't take very to get our food. The musubi was good but ratio of rice to spam was not great. It had too much rice and spam was thin. The fried wonton was crispy and delicious but the filling was tiny....about the size of a gumball. There was a soy-wasabi dip that came with it.
We ordered combos for our main course. I got a regular size (chicken & beef) and one daughter got a small combo (pork &beef), and the other ordered a grilled cheese sandwich & fries.
Overall, the food was pretty good. The servings are huge. Even the small plate had a lot of food on it. The beef was not that hot when it came out. The flavors were good. We would...
