This is one of two shawarmas that have ruined me for all other shawarmas. The first was a lamb shawarma wrap I had a little Turkish joint in West Kensington, London in 2002. The second was a lamb shawarma wrap I had yesterday in Anchorage, AK. That first lamb shawarma had haunted be for over twenty years and ruined me for all other shawarmas - to be honest I’d given up on ever experiencing that level of delight and satisfaction ever again. That is until I landed in Anchorage on my first trip to Alaska and was brought directly from the airport to this place. An unassuming Somali shawarma joint in a stip mall: a surprising choice for a first meal in Alaska, I thought. Over twenty year after that lamb wrap in West Ken, I had finally begun to reconcile myself with garden variety shawarma. Enjoy it even. So the idea of a decent shawarma after a long 10 hour trip was not unappealing. My friend is a regular at this place and the lovely proprietor, Ouda, greeted us warmly and engaged us in long friendly conversation before taking our order. We each ordered the lamb shawarma wrap. One bite and I was transported. I don’t have the vocabulary to properly describe the flavours and textures, suffice to say that the love and care and hard work that Ouda and her staff put into their food comes through in with every mouthful. Now any reconciliation that I may have had with other common shawarmas is gone. I will once again return to my country where all other sandwiches will appear grey and pedestrian as I forever pine for another bite of Ouda’s most delightful and delicious shawarma wrap....
Read moreI don’t usually leave reviews, however, in this case it was a must! After a long 20 hour day worth of travel, we finally made it to Anchorage and our AirBnB just so happened to be located near My Shawarma House. A brisk walk. Seemingly it was also the only store (plus the halal market) that was open late for dinner. My boyfriend and I decided we would try it out! I had never had shawarma before, but my boyfriend has and he said it was the best he’s ever had and even as someone who has never had shawarma before you can tell it is 100% authentic. The portions are amazing for the price, seriously cannot beat it. The sweet woman at the counter who made our food, and I believe owns the store, was just the cherry on top! Her customer service was phenomenal and she never had a smile leave her face. It was so pleasant walking into a restaurant where those making your food greet you and value you! (Won’t find that at most other restaurants)
My boyfriend and I both ordered the lamb shawarma wrap and he ordered a mango lassi. Everything we ate was amazing! I mean seriously some of the best food I have ever ate, so much so we will be going back again tonight! I 100% recommend everyone eat here over and over and over again, it is that good! Also going to explore the halal market after we finished was so cool! Just do yourself a favor and get in your car (or walk) to grab yourself some...
Read moreFirst i want to say please eat a snack before you go. If they get busy then they get busy. No need for hangry as you may need to wait. Also know what you want before you arrive haha. I heard many say the lamb Burritos and plates were excellent! I ordered the chicken Shawarma and the curry chicken. I have had shawarmas all over the world. I would say this is better than the Turkish Doner by far. The white and green sauce they give you adds another dimension to the flavor. If I did not know any better this is Somalian food. And the spices and recipe blends the perfect flavor for that. Now this Shawarma was 11$ and well worth it. I have never ate just 1 before now. I took the chicken curry home to eat because I was full. Amazing. Now for the chicken curry, it was 21$ and they give you enough for 2 people. I cannot say enough. Very flavorful and just moist and soft chicken and rice. Now some said it was salty. This was not salty at all. It was flavored perfectly. I would definitely go back again. And Shawarma was more like a doner to me. Not like traditional shawarmas I have had even recently by a Lebanese couple. Definitely busy, great price, great service. The gentleman at the counter was a boss. He was truly amazing managing all those people and was still kind and smiling. Great place. Don't ever...
