My wife and I went here for dinner on a Friday night in late Nov. She has been eagerly awaiting to try this restaurant. We started with the drunken cheese as our appetizer. It was a toss up between that and the jalapeno poppers, but the extremely polite server recommend the cheese. She was excellent. The drunken cheese was delicious. Plenty of everything, lots of shrimp, veg, and of course cheese. The tortillas were absolutely delicious. My wife ordered the Alaskan halibut with lemon dill sauce. I'm trying to limit what I eat to mostly proteins, so I ordered a dozen wings (I had also asked the server if they were good wings and she assured me that the wings were good and popular), and a half rack of ribs. First the halibut. My wife was happy with it. She said it was a bit firm, so I asked for a bite. I'm not a fan of halibut. Mainly because I prefer a fishy tasting fish, and halibut is just way too bland for my liking. I took a bite of the "halibut" with the lemon dill sauce and IMMEDIATELY was hit with a fish taste. I didn't mind it, but at the same time, that's not what I was expecting from halibut. I don't know. I'm not saying it wasn't halibut, because I don't eat enough to be a connoisseur of it, but I know why I don't like it. Bottom line, she was okay with it. I'm still a little suspect about it. On to the chicken wings and the ribs. Ohh the chicken wings. I'm 100% sure I know how these chickens were killed before they were made into these wings. They were starved to death. They were skin and bones and fried hard. The wings claim to have the house rub on them, but I didn't taste any rub at all. They were tasteless without sauce. Some people enjoy a skinny wing. I'm not a fan. I like a wing with some meat on the bone. I didn't send them back because I rarely send food back in fear of repercussion, disagreement of my opinion from BOH, and I don't want to wait all over again. I ate them first because I knew they wouldn't keep if I had to take anything home. They weren't good. I wouldn't order them again. Now the ribs. The flavor was amazing. They were delicious. Fall right off the bone tender. I tried a bite of the slaw that came with. It was so so. It could use allot of help. Back to the ribs. If you like a rib with a bit more tooth, these aren't the ribs for you. If you like a rib that just falls apart by looking at it, these are for you. They're rich and delicious. I'd order them again. That night, we were one of maybe 2/3 other tables plus the bar. They weren't slammed by any stretch. Service was perfect, food was so so. Bottom line, it was alright. I won't be putting this on the top of my must...
Read moreWe wanted some dinner and opted for a new (to us) place, so our first visit. Walking in we were greeted by someone and quickly seated. General environment was clean and inviting. Our booth was comfortable as well. Our waitress was quick to greet us, providing menus, and asked if we wanted something to drink. Drink menu was pretty extensive, but wine list seemed to only list some prices. We had a Double Shovel cider and a Mojito. The mojito is not something I would ever order here again. It was not good. We also ordered the chicherons (halibut and octopus fried strips with guacamole) to start. I liked this idea but the execution was lacking. Both halibut and octopus were dry and chewy. To get to the guacamole was a challenge being buried in a bowl. Combined together they were not bad, but the meat elements solo lacked flavor, had confused textures and just were not good. For our meal I ordered the porkchops and my wife got the shrimp salad dressing on the side. When the food arrived the dressing wasn't provided and took 2 separate requests to arrive. The porkchops were breaded and fried. For the salad, the shrimp were large and juicy, avocado was fresh and greens were all great. Without the dressing it wasn't as good, and once made available the salad was a star. A couple things on the porkchops, the seasoning was in the breading, which didn't hold well to the meat. The meat was bone in, so breaded this required a little adventure with a knife to cut off. The sauce was good and the salad that comes with it was as well. But the pork needs love. Brine it, let the fat render and caramelize, don't hide it in breading where it cannot shine! And please don't hide bones in breading, not a great experience there.
Over the course of the meal the wait staff was reasonably attentive but as the restaurant filled up they were slowed down. Drinks or requests took longer and longer. We noticed the Bar is covered by 1 person mainly which seems challenging for the number of orders we saw as the tables filled in.
I'm not sure if I'll come back or not. Lots of good reviews, but we'll see. This place has...
Read moreMy wife and another couple tried this place for the first time last night. When we walked through the door I was immediately put off by the vast openness of the space, the entire restaurant is one big open area with no partions of any kind. Once seated I immediately noticed the room was very noisy despite few table being occupied. It wasn't guest noise or dishes clattering, it was sort of a dull roar or humm echoing throughout the entire space. Perhaps the ventilation system or exhaust fans from the open kitchen food window, not sure. But my initial impression of the space despite having a nice bar on one side of the room was it offered all the dining appeal of a hospital cafeteria.
We opened our menus and we're immediately shocked by the entree prices. Most dinner entrees ranged from $25 to $35. Based on my opinion of the dining room experience there was no way I way buying a $30 entree here. Our dining partners were also surprised by the entree prices. My wife and I both settled on the Coyote burger as it was the least expensive entree on the menu at $14, and you're always happy with a burger, right? When our burgers arrived at first glance they looked fine, but I quickly noticed how thin the patty was. It was nearly as thin as a big Mac patty, the thinnest burger patty I've likely ever been served in my life. Very underwhelming.
The couple we were dining with also had mixed impressions of their $25 entrees, they were "fine", nothing to get excited about.
Saint Coyote was overpriced and simply didn't offer good value or an enjoyable dining atmosphere and we will not be returning. There are no shortage of great alternatives in Anchorage that offer a far better dining experience...
