UPDATE 6 years later: I still come here regularly. Let me tell you about their secret menu. Essentially, it is “order whatever you want within the New Mexico food realm and they will find a way to make it.”

I ordered a chile relleno burrito today with queso on top and it did NOT disappoint!!! Absolutely delicious.

Also for all the people complaining about having to order at the counter first before seating: this is a mom + pop place, all family run. They survived COVID but not without the hardship of being unable to keep their staff during the worst of the pandemic forcing the whole family to come together to keep it afloat. This is also remarkable because we all know many small businesses did not survive covid without having to close permanently. Even after the brunt of it all, it has been hard to find/keep staff making regular table service like people are accustomed to nearly impossible. They all work hard and still manage to maintain the quality of their food through it all.

Maybe it isn’t a bad idea to remind ourselves that not having full table service is a “first world problem” because I know eating out and affording a good meal is a privilege not everyone has access to, even in this country. ——— Original review: Always consistent,...

I'm blessed to try many restaurants because of my job. We are well fed when in the field working. Our teams and training groups have eaten here many times through the years.

Absolutely the sweetest owner, great food, and yesterday we had an awesome server. I love their green sauce cheese enchiladas and so far they have the best sopapillas I've ever had in the Albuquerque region.

They can take awhile to get your food, so if you're in a hurry, this is not your place. But if you have the time, I think you'll be pleased!

Be sure to check their hours before you go, as I usually find them closed on my first try each visit (my fault, I forget their days/hours). However, they are good enough that I come back when they are open.

#1 on my list of restaurants I always choose when in ABQ, because it's best all-around. There are other ABQ restaurants with great food, too...but none compare all-around! I'll be back in Oct...I can't wait!

Please like my review if you appreciate that I take my time to honestly review/inform/update on this place before you spend your...

Took my family here as they visited from Nevada. They asked me if i could take them to a nice New Mexican food place, and El Charritos was the first place that came to mind. They loved it, and they were very impressed with their chile relleno plates and the 'amazing' sopapillas! At first, they thought it weird that we had to order before we sat down, but I asked the owner about this, and she politely explained why. They do this because they do not have enough wait staff to effectively serve at the tables, which immediately made sense. I'm thankful that I found a 'hit', quaint, place for my family and it's always a great feeling taking them to a restaurant that showcases the best of what New Mexico has to offer. Thank you, El Charritos, for offering my family a great experience, great service, and a lasting, tasty, and warm experience. But, most of all, the best chile rellenos they...

Born and raised in Albuquerque, my family has been coming to El Charritos since I can remember. The many locally owned and family operated New Mexican restaurants can make for difficult decisions! Coming here is like walking into a local family’s big casa! Prices, portions, and are all on point, no matter what you order. As our waitress said, “we aren’t stingy here!” Taste-wise, the comida is wonderful! The chile has flavor and the right amount of heat. The papitas and frijoles are almost out of your abuela’s (grandma’s) kitchen. You can’t go wrong with the huevos rancheros! The chile rellenos (also pictured) are delicious, but a little too breaded for my taste, but they may be perfect for you!

My BFF and I stopped in here. Pros: huge portions for your money. The combo plates are quite large. The service was efficient and very friendly. The sopapillas were sooooo good! I liked the enchilada and the taco. The beans were very good as well, and they were fine with my having all beans instead of beans and rice. Cons: the "milder" chile was too hot for me. I've lost a lot of my spice tolerance, but I just dipped my fork to taste and drank all my water. The tamal was a little dry, but lots of meat in it. I would have preferred a squeeze bottle of honey instead of the little cups, they were rather messy. Still, pretty good if you're really hungry.

We have been wanting to try El Charritos for years. We finally got the opportunity to try. The atmosphere was very nice. The lady that took the order at the front desk was very nice. She's the owner. The servers, could have been more friendly and more attentive. We got cheese enchiladas with both red and green chile. The red and green chile are phenomenally good. That chile hit the spot. My friend enjoyed her taco. I had a chile relleno. It was good. It was very different than what I'm used to in a good chile relleno. If I go back, I don't think I'd get that again. I do want to go back and try their other items. It was a fun day.
