I've heard Bobby Box, a local DJ, advertise this place, and since I've enjoyed Bobby for nearly 30 years on the radio, I wanted to try this restaurant. When I walked in I got a surprise - there were whole rows of tables pushed together, but the place was mostly empty. I did like the fact that half the seating area was dark while the other half was light - if you wanted to see you could sit there, and if you didn't you could sit over there.
The man behind the counter was friendly and helpful. Once he'd described things to me making up mind was easy. He took the order professionally, and gave me my change and cup without any bobbles. I decided to sit at a counter by the window, so that I could look out from time to time.
I waited and waited for my food. After 20 or 25 minutes, thinking that perhaps I'd just not heard anyone call my name (I was reading a book on my phone), I went to the counter, where the gentleman said that it took about 15 minutes to fix the food. Hmmm... Nevertheless I went back to my seat, and in another five or 10 minutes my order was ready. I can't feature how it would take 20-30 minutes to fix a burger and fries when the place was not busy, but it did.
The "burger bar" was just a cart with a limited selection, and the lid on the relish squeeze bottle came off - probably not for the first time, for the thing was wet all over the outside. But the burger was well done - a thing I usually ask for but forgot this time. And the fries were the first fries in a long time that had enough salt to suit me.
Overall it was an uneven experience. Maybe it was just a bad day, but lately it seems that everyplace I go, except for fast food joints, just doesn't measure up to basic standards on all points. If the service is great the food is lacking, and if the food is great the service is lacking. I'd intended to write a glowing review, because Bobby Box has spoken so highly of the place, but I just can't honestly do that. The place is just so-so - at least, that's how it was on...

Read moreAs someone always looking to stretch a dollar without having to rely too heavily on fast food. I'm always on the lookout for local joints that offer quality food at bargain prices. The Grill is no doubt one of these types of places. I've always spotted this place from San Mateo over the past year or so and never gave it so much as a second thought. Today, that changed as I (for whatever reason) made a sudden sharp turn off the road and into The Grill's parking lot. While the menu list is limited in its overall offerings. Everything (with exception of the $23 steak) is reasonably priced at around or under ten dollars. I decided to go with the 6oz burger, which is dubbed as "the mamma burger". I opted to switch the french fires out for mozzarella sticks which only set me back an additional $1.50. Complementary chips and salsa are available at the garnish/condiments bar while you wait for your order. When mine arrived, I was pleased to find the mozzarella sticks to have an authentic homemade texture. Plus, the burger had the ideal smokey flavor and aroma that can only come from being made on... you guessed it, a grill. My meal certainly hit the spot and vanquished my late afternoon hunger. The enticing fresh homemade chocolate cake on the register counter almost seduced me in . However, my restraint persevered and it'll have to wait for another time. The cleanliness and maintenance of the restaurant was also certainly noted and is a definite plus in my book. Albuquerque does have a decent variety of "hole in the wall" style restaurants. The Grill on San Mateo is one of them. If passing and notice the large red western styled letters that spell out the restaurants name. Don't let it go noticed! You'll only be doing yourself a...
