I've been eating at The Yeller Sub for 44 years. I've ordered the same meal every single time I've visited. Whole steak torpedo - all the garnish with provolone cheese and an order of regular fries. Seems there has been some changes driven by the new owners. I like the self serve soda machine. And, the new registers are nice. However, some changes are not as appealing.
This is just speculation but it seems the new owners are looking for efficiencies by changing some of their products. Here is what I've noticed. 1. The bread no longer seems to be baked fresh in the store. The bread being served now has a slight crust. Gone is the super soft and tasty fresh bread. I hope I'm wrong about the bread and I just got an "off" batch. 2. The steak in the steak torpedo seems to now be pre-cooked and is just being warmed (instead of cooked) on the grill. The meat used to be thinly sliced rib-eye. Now, the steak is cut thicker and lacks most of the flavor that you'd expect from a rib-eye. It was also slightly overcooked. 3. The lettuce has always been fresh and crunchy. This time, the lettuce was old and withered. 4. The fries were over-cooked. To be honest, this has been happening for some time and I do not contribute this to the any recent changes.
I understand the need for change and cost savings in this market. In this case, it's difficult for me to say that I would return for my favorite sandwich. A sandwich that I used to describe as the best sandwich in New Mexico. If you've changed the meat used in your sandwiches, please bring back the old meat. Also, please bring back your old bread and...
Read moreThis has been my second visit but the first time reviewing this shop (reviewing for my visit on December 4th. 2024). Let me get the basics for my review out of the way. The shop has a nice old school vibe. Kind of neat to see that they have an ice cream counter and the ability to make shakes too. The interior of the shop had a cool retro vibe. Tables and floor were clean and the staff was busy working to complete the orders as I walked in. I was warmly greeted at the counter by a young lady. I asked what her recommendation might be and she gladly gave me the recommendation for the sub that I ordered. She mentioned that she liked ordering the BLT sub but adding an egg. Being that I do like eggs, I gladly accepted her recommendation. I also ordered some criss cut fries. I rarely will give a place five stars because I'm trying to give an honest review and not just following the crowd. In this instance, this sandwich alone definitely deserved a five-star rating. The bread, the eggs, the bacon, the provolone, the lettuce, the tomato, the pickles: Everything was spot on. The criss cut fries did not disappoint. But the star of the show was the care and intent with which this sandwich was made. I could go to a hundred shops and can be wowed with super customer service or a vast selection of a menu with or whatever else. But this visit to Yeller Sub (all because of this young lady's recommendation and the final product) was excellent to say the least. This sub is now by far my favorite sandwich in Albuquerque. Please thank the young lady working the counter on 12/4/24 at around...
Read moreFirst time visiting! Was very impressed with the level of service that I received from the workers! I was ordering with someone else and they were more than happy to separate our to-go orders in different bags for us. When I got home the order was flawless; no mistakes were made in my order at all. I got chips and a tuna torpedo. The chips were fantastic, much better than any french fry could be! They were crunchy but not over done and just salty enough to be yummy. My tuna torpedo was likewise delicious. I'm a fan of tuna fish sandwiches and by far they have the best tasting tuna I've had in awhile. No cranberries, no walnuts, no weird stuff; just a very good very delicious and basic tuna mayo salad with all the basic fixings. It didn't have too much mayonnaise, as I find Subway's tuna fish sandwiches to have (plus Subway's tuna salad is very, painfully plain). With some lettuce, tomatoes and provolone cheese, my tuna torpedo was definitely a solid tuna sandwich. The tuna also didn't drip a lot, which was great because it made for clean eating! The prices for the food was quite reasonable, especially for the sandwiches, which are nice and big when you get a half. Over all I was greatly impressed with the service, the quality of food and the prices of Yeller Sub. 10 out of 10, will definitely be eating there again when I get the chance to again. Because I've found out that there's an amazing alternative to Subway right in my...
