Read moreTLDR: Food is about as far from authentically German as you can get -- and even if taken just at face value, without the descriptor of "German," unfortunately just not very good. Front of house needs more training on basic server etiquette (e.g. prebussing tables, timing apps before entrees, checking in after dropping food/general attentiveness to guests).
THE DEETS: Firstly, their menu is what I would call erratic. For a restaurant that explicitly claims to be a German Bier Garden, they have more items like fried rice and empanadas than authentic german dishes. If you're going for multicultural or fusion, then say that! Cool! But don't put "prost" in giant letters on the wall and then put out a menu that, of all its items, its German dishes are the most limited in number. That's just poor marketing -- not to mention misleading to guests. And to that end: google is your friend. It's not that hard to do a little research, and to make sure that the very few German dishes that you actually do manage to offer are actually authentic! Especially for those prices!! This disconnect is really made all the more obvious and, quite frankly, a little bizarre, by the fact that the previous German restaurant at this location already had (slightly mediocre, but still decently) authentic dishes.
With regards to the food that I ordered, specifically: The mac and cheese was (cold) and bland ~ and even though, after asking and being told that it was made with spaetzle, was just normal macaroni noodles. Lame. (So, what do they offer as a main starch? Polenta. Lol okayyy) The "paprika chicken" (I believe they mean chicken paprikash?) was just chewy grilled chicken in a thin, vaguely red colored sauce. It was basically barbeque. The potato salad was certainly not traditional, and tasted overpoweringly of mustard (it was basically a mustard sauce, and while Germans love mustard... not like that, man). The red cabbage was mushy and bland. Just. Not good.
Literally nothing was tasty except the beers ~ and, I will say, at least they served their beers in the proper glassware! It has been ages since I've ordered a Hefeweizen in the States which was served in an actual Weizenglas! So, that was nice. But the only thing that was nice.
The only other traditional dishes which I remember seeing on the menu were a pretzel (ya can't mess that up. I hope.); potato pancakes; Schnitzel (though, again, they seem to be very confused by what a Jäger schnitzel is, based on their various menu descriptions); Suaerbraten and Schweinshaxe, though not sure if I'd trust them, based on this experience; and a variety of sausages -- but, for how expensive they are, you are just as well off going to Aldi, where you will get 100% authentic, imported Wurst for cheap!
All in all a huge disappointment, and a major flop. If I ever go back, I will only be getting drinks. Wirklich...
Read moreI'm 0 for 3 with these guys. They just never seem to have their stuff together. Won't be going back. First time I went was shortly after they first opened (pre-pandemic). The service was excruciatingly slow. When the food finally arrived the waitress promptly took it back because she said it was meant for another table, and we waited another 20 or so minutes to be served. I chalked it up to growing pains with a new staff at a new restaurant, though.
Sometime later (also pre-pandemic) I tried to reserve space for a Saturday afternoon for a party of 40 to 50 people. The assistant manager with whom I spoke told me that I had the reservation, but when I called back in the weeks leading up to the event to try to iron out details on a menu, pricing, etc., she was non-committal and told me she'd call me back. After I didn't hear anything for a few days I read the writing on the wall and booked a reservation at O'Connell's just down King Street. Then, the day before the event was supposed to take place, I got a call from the manager saying he wanted to confirm that the party was still on. I explained to him that I'd called several times but never heard back from his assistant manager (or any other staff member) to finalize the plans so I'd booked a reservation elsewhere. I got the impression his staff had told him that everything was taken care of, so he was clearly very surprised and irritated when I told him what had happened.
Finally went back just the other day for happy hour with colleagues. Same old story. Service started out slow and they messed up a couple things with our orders. I ordered a second beer at 7 o'clock. Around 7:15 the waitress passingly said they were having an issue with the taps. I asked for my bill so I could leave after finishing my beer, whenever it might've arrived. Then the staff seemed to just disappear. Finally, around 8 o'clock we had to go inside and track down the staff so the rest of the party could close out. We never got an explanation from the staff, they just seemed to ghost all the patrons. And, unfortunately, I closed out my tab before that second beer ever arrived. I didn't dare waste my time trying to get a refund, though. Disappointing, but consistent with my experience...
