Visited Wert's Café yesterday afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner. My wife had found this place on Pinterest and she was eager to go. We arrived around 3:30PM and were surprised that there were a fair amount of people there considering the time of day. We were quickly seated by a friendly young man and were soon greeted by our waitress. She handed us the menus with a cheerful smile. We decided on the hamburgers since the internet claims Wert's has the best burger in Pennsylvania. When anybody says they have the best anything I am always a little skeptical. I ordered the Wert's burger and my wife, the patty melt. We also tried the famous onion rings highly recommended on line. I am here to tell you that the burger and patty melt were quite large and delicious. The meat tasted like sirloin and was moist and juicy. Their menu claims that the burger is served on a Kaiser roll but I would describe it as more of a bakery made hamburger roll. Kaiser rolls are always too large and hard and dry and this roll was quite the opposite, moist and tender and baked just right, akin to an old fashioned bakery burger roll. The onion rings were the type that are very thin and stringy, drained very well and seasoned with salt perfectly with a slight sweetness, perhaps a vidalia onion variety. The burgers were accompanied with an abundant portion of potato chips. I also ordered a cup of the homemade chicken and bowtie noodle soup which was chock full of white chicken meat and noodles and vegetables. It was excellent!
We ended up taking half our food home as the burgers were close to if not a half pound and the onion rings/straws could have easily fed 6.
Whether you think this establishment has "the best burger in Pa" is subjective, however I would rate it as a 9.5 at least on a scale of 10.
One more thing: I told the server that this was our first time there and she brought back a piece of homemade chocolate cake with peanut butter icing in a to go box with my check as a gift for our first time visit. I am going to return to Wert's Café and I suggest you...
Read moreWert's Cafe in a nutshell? If you are from the Lehigh Valley, you know about it. If you are just passing through, you SHOULD know about it. I brought my sweaty crew of miscreants and ne'er-do-well construction workers to this place and the joint was jumpin', as they say. We were rolling 6 deep (*translated: there were SIX of us coming to this lovely establishment) and time was limited for us. I headed up the charge to go in and find out if there was space for us. I was given the "nod of approval". "Are you sure? There's SIX of us". They were sure. And minutes later when I brought everyone in, there was a big section ready and waiting for us. These people go through great pains to make sure there is space for you and your friends! Sound good? It IS. While it would appear we missed the big lunch hour rush, it was still plenty busy. But the staff absolutely crushed it. Friendly, genuine people. Minutes after we were seated we had a lovely young lady come take our orders. And it wasn't very long before our food came to us! Amazing, right? Amazing, indeed! Our server kept tabs on us, stopping by periodically to make sure everything was in good order. Total pro! You know how you can tell everyone is happy with their meal? -SILENCE- Nobody is talking. Everyone is blissfully enjoying their meal. As it should be. Just for reference, I got the Wert's Cheeseburger. It comes with Onions and Mushrooms and it's awesome! Now, my question for you: do you like spicy mustard? If SO, you MUST get some from here. Get a small tub to go with your meal but definitely ask for some to go before you leave. It will change the way you look at life! I'm already planning what I'm going to get the next time we go there! I could go on and on about Wert's. But this ain't about me. It's about YOU, dear reader. It's about you stepping in and checking it out. I have confidence you will have just as good an experience with Wert's as I and my crew mates had. Hmmm, maybe another Monte Cristo next time...( It's...
Read moreThis is a family owned business that treats their customers like family. I've been coming here for over 30 years. Phil's burger, onion rings, and a piece of chocolate cake. A tradition for me.
Sadly, I moved away from Allentown 25 years ago, but always visit when I'm home visiting friends and family. This summer, stuck at home due to covid, I suddenly had a craving for their chocolate cake and white icing. I reached out to them asking if they shipped. They were concerned. It was hot. It would melt in the long transit from PA to Seattle. But they would look into it.
Time moves on. The pandemic continues. They focus on the survival of their business and the ever changing rules and needs. I don't get my cake yet. But Kathy from Wert's keeps in touch with me the entire time.
Now we are at Thanksgiving and to my surprise, a most beautiful and tasty chocolate cake and two tubs of white icing arrive at my doorstep today in the most carefully wrapped package, kept cold to ensure it's freshness. It's a gift from them, to thank me for my patience. I insist on paying, but they just ask that next time I'm in town, I visit their restaurant and bring my friends.
I couldn't say more. Comfort food, comfortable environment, and people who go out of their way, even out of state, for their customers. It's hard to find businesses today that are willing to do this.
I'm looking forward to my next visit with my friends. And having my Phil's burger, onion rings, and another slice of their...
