I had high hopes for Spicy Mike’s BBQ in Amarillo, Texas, but unfortunately, my recent visit was nothing short of disappointing. We were eager to try their BBQ chicken and even called ahead to ensure they had it available. The person on the phone assured us they did, so we drove over, arriving just 10 minutes later.

To our surprise, as soon as we walked in, we noticed the board stating they were out of chicken. Confused, we stood in line behind two other customers, despite there being two employees standing idly who didn’t bother to greet us or offer any assistance. Their cold and unfriendly demeanor was off-putting from the start. In fact, nobody acknowledged us from the moment we walked through the door, which speaks volumes about the lack of customer focus in this establishment.

When it was finally our turn, we asked about the chicken, mentioning that we had called just minutes earlier. The employee at the counter told us they had “run out” of chicken 10 minutes prior. This was incredibly frustrating, especially considering it was only 4 PM, and they were open until 8 PM. How do you run out of chicken so early in the evening, especially after confirming over the phone that you had it available?

It’s disappointing to see that customers aren't the main focus at Spicy Mike's BBQ. Instead of prioritizing customer service, the staff seemed more concerned with tasks like stocking supplies while patrons waited in line. Southern hospitality and common courtesy were noticeably absent, leaving us feeling ignored and undervalued.

Overall, our experience at Spicy Mike’s BBQ was marred by poor customer service and a sense of dishonesty. It felt like we were misled, and our visit was a waste of time. We left without ordering anything and with no intention of returning. Spicy Mike’s may have a reputation for good barbecue, but their service and reliability leave much...

The best BBQ in Amarillo! (Year ago) This is a long review so please bare with me... Well I have to say with a heavy heart that I had to edit my review and drop them to a 3 star. I made a to-go order in the restaurant. Had to wait a little bit, but that was expected as they were a little busy. I made a special request on my order of "no beans" and they cashier got that as it was on my receipt. When my order was ready they brought it out to me and I left with my bag of food. Once I got home and ready to enjoy some amazing bbq, I unpacked it and it was like my heart was ripped from my chest. Beans everywhere! So with my disappointment I pack the food back up and head back to the restaurant. Once I walked in with the bag the next cashier asks "what can I get you?" Well, I said I would like for my order to be correct. She promptly took it and asked what was wrong and I stated there was not to be any beans. As they remade my order I decided to order a small side fully expecting to pay for it, but kind of hoping they would comp it or at least something for my inconvenience, that did not happen. She gladly charged me for the side dish. My order is ready in a quick turnaround and I took it and left. Once home again my excitement was building for the amazing bbq and I sat down unpacked it and... Soul crushing disappointment, the meat was cold and the cheese not even slightly melted. I really didnt want to write this as I really like Spicy Mike's but with the cost of the meal for the amount and quality that I received it was time. I really hope this is just some new staff or something crazy as I do like Mike's and will return at least one more time just to see what happens and if the fire...

Northerners trying Texas BBQ.

We were referred to this place by a local and felt that the one BBQ place that we had already tried is super famous it might be better to try something smaller. Of course, loved the name. I called for instructed to do Covid regulations and they were super helpful on what I could do. I just could pull up and order. Great news! I had my order. I drove over and placed it. We got the Big meal with the Ribs, Biscuit and Green Chile Cheese Sausage and the sides of Mike-a-roni, green beans and potato salad. What really has me writing in was the potato salad. I was sort of confused by it. It was more like a potato salad whip. It is super sweet (I suspect made with Miracle Whip) and there were no chunks of pototos just small bits of them here and there but just mostly whipped potato’s.

My husband gave the meat a 4.5. It was juicy and delicious. The sauces were good but the “spicy” was a bit too much for him. Loved the ribs and Briscuit for sure. Sausage was good too. He’d have come back. Too bad he was ready to eat because we did not even get a photo.

The sides were in the box with the meat and had kind of slipped around on the car ride home. I would have preferred them to be in their own container. Maybe that is something you could ask for. The salad came that way.

So overall. Meat 4.5 Sides and value/size 3.5 Friendliness of the staff 4.5

We would...

think overall this is some of the best bbq I have had. I really like the ribs. They have a good amount of smoke to them and pull off the bone. The brisket is cut think so you are able to get a really good taste of the bark. Their special spicy mike’s mac and cheese has a wonderful heat to it along with the creamy, salty cheese sauce that good mac and cheese has. The beans are also some of the best I have had. They are smoky with little bits of pork in it. And I don’t usually drink sweet tea but their coconut sweet tea is a great contrast to all the spice and smoke in the food. It is also not too sweet. I have to say that everything else, though not exceptional, was what it should be. Often Texas toast is soggy and unappealing. Though it may seem simple it is worth noting that the toast here is good: a little bit of butter the makes it nice and crispy, a nice tan color. The slaw and potatoes are also not over complicated and make for great staples for cold sides.

Stopped in after a google search while on the road. It’s not hard to get to off i-40 but it’s not as convenient as other places. I DO recommend the side trip. Excellent brisket and ribs. The Mikearoni is fantastic, mac and cheese is standard bbq fare but this is different, was spiced with green chile and was so delicious! The sauce they call regular is pretty good sweet/vinegar/tomato style and the spicy sauce is exactly that very tasty but has, what I call, stacking heat ( the more you eat the hotter it gets) The potato salad was typical southern style a little sweetness, but good. I had banana pudding for dessert and it was excellent! Highly recommend the short side trip for this bbq !!!
