I want to say my childhood dream was fulfilled. Ever since I saw I the King of the Hill episode where Bobby ate the 72 oz steak challenge to spite his vegetarian ex girlfriend, I knew I wanted to try it. More than 20 years later, I fulfilled my childhood dream and went to the Big Texan for the first time and tried the 72 oz steak challenge. No training or anything, just full of lack of sleep and hunger, I won. Service was great, our server was very friendly. Ended up cheering me on and assisted me with everything that I needed, extra napkins, extra ranch sauce. Ranch sauce is amazing, it’s so good. Steak tastes amazing, I definitely would recommend tying it medium rare. Anything else is just wrong. Their gift shift definitely has a lot of stuff to buy. Reasonably priced. They have a bunch of little things to do in their hallway area, good time to be spent there. They actually have an ATM machine and a change machine that accepts bills up to $50 and hands out $1 bills. Next time I’m in Armarillo, I will come back to just eat a normal sized steak and enjoy myself nice and slow. Tips for people who want to try the challenge: Watch your water in take. Too much water will make you feel full. Use it as needed. Get medium rare, easier to swallow down. Go for the steak first, it’s the biggest hurdle. Use your hands instead of a knife and fork, so be sure to wash your hands before you go in. Once your mouth hurts or you feel like you might throw up, switch it up with eating some of your salad or eat the shrimp, give your mouth and gag reflex a little break. Don’t finish the salad until the end of your steak, it’s going to be the only thing that can help you have a break but keep working on the challenge. Once you feel like you can’t handle anymore steak, pro tip use the ranch. It will help your brain trick you into thinking it’s something else. Ask for extra. It’s ok to stop eating the ranch once you feel like it will make you want to throw up. Once you mentally cannot eat anymore steak without almost throwing up, eat much smaller chunks, infant sized chunks. Makes it easier to beat the mental challenge. Then go ahead and finish that salad once you finished that steak. Baked potato is next if you haven’t already eaten that shrimp. For the baked potato, for many people it’s hard to eat a baked potato by itself. It’s so dry and not appetizing. Cut fhe baked potatoe in half and dip in the ranch. Then go ahead and eat the roll last since it’s the easiest to eat. If you need help here, drink some water. It will break it down and make it easier to chew and swallow.

October 7, 2024 - Yes, The Big Texan is a tourist-stop for lunch & dinner ! I didn’t hear any complaints from our Maryland group returning home . . . after enjoying my 18 oz. Ribeye steak ! 😃👍🏼👍🏼 There’s plenty of parking ( cars & busses) and dining spaces. Established on Historic Rt. 66 back in 1960 by R.J. “ Bob” Lee & family have served thousands of folks for over 60 years ! Opened 7 days a week, in the heart of Amarillo, Texas . . . the 3 rd generation Lee family serves good food in a family fun atmosphere. The menu has more than steak, but it’s the reason why we stopped for lunch. Some folks ordered chicken & salads . . . but I prefer the marbled Rib-Eye steak cooked to medium! If you’re famished, try the Legend 72 oz. Top Sirloin steak , if you finish the 4.5 pounds , plus 3 fried shrimp, baked potato, side salad, and roll. . . In 1 hour , it’s FREE ! Eating lots of beef, chicken , and fish has its drawbacks. Especially if you consider the use of water in raising the animals. Also the chemicals on farms for weed control, and use of antibiotics to protect the animals. Not to mention chemicals in water regarding fish . Over time folks are slowly moderating their meat intake. Once in awhile I love a good burger or steak . 😃👍🏼 Folks in search of “ top tier quality ” steaks & fish will notice the disappearance of steak restaurant chains. Steak House chains now GONE ! *York Steak House - 1966 , 200 locations *Mr. Steak - 1962, 250 locations *Valle’s Steakhouse - 1933 200,000/week *Steak & Ale - 1966, 300 locations *Lone Star Steakhouse - 1989, 265 locations *Rustler Steakhouse -1964, owned bySizzler *Beefsteak Charlie’s - 1910,franchised 1970s *Dakota Steakhouse - 1984 in Northeast *Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse - 1993 in NJ * Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse - 1966 in NJ, with 29 locations, only 2 remain * Victoria Station - 1969 (Johnny Cash investor) *Roadhouse Grill / Buffalo Roadhouse - 1993 *BOCA - Seattle based steakhouse *Hilltop Steakhouse - 1961 serving 1500 a day in Saugus, MA * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Bottom line . . . Go to a “ Top Tier” Steak restaurant if you can pay their price? Or Cook up your own Rib-Eye at home! Currently Rib-Eye is around $20 to $30 a pound at a good butcher shop !

This place is amazing! Our wait was about an hour and a half, but there is plenty to do to pass the time. Bar and desert bars are accessible while you wait, as well as a shooting range game and gift shop in addition to almost endless photo opportunities. The restaurant is quite crowded, but the atmosphere is fun enough. You don't really feel crowded. We had a party of 5. They sat us at two 4-person tables with a 2 person tables at the end. While we ate, they sat a solo patron at the 2-person table connected to ours, so I shared elbow space with someone. Fortunately, he did respect us, and we respected him. As for food...Yum yum yum!! My steak was cooked to just slightly cooler than I asked for, but it was probably for the best. My mashed potatoes were flavorful, and my country beans were something to remember. The rest of our part, 2 of which were kiddos, loved every aspect of their meals as well. The kids' meals were served in a kids' straw cowboy hat that they could take home and wear afterward. You can order your drinks in souvenir cups or glasses. The prices of these are very reasonable, so don't buy cups in the gift shop, just wait to order your drink. Don't forget you did that and walk away without taking your glass! All in all, I would recommend this place regardless of the wait time. The food is great and the prices are really good. Our family of 6 can easily spend up to or more than $200 when we go out, and here with the tip. 2 souvenir cups and 5 orders of steak (one of which was the filet), we spent less than $200! Lastly, watching people take the FREE 72oz. steak challenge is entertaining! We got to see a couple of fairly large men start and quit! It's quite a challenge, but if you win it, it's free. Sadly, you won't have gotten to enjoy your food, but you can say you did it and have the tee shirt to prove it (or save yourself and buy the tee shirt in the gift shop). Don't skip this place as a traveler or a local, and if they have the space, they offer on-site accommodations, including getting to stay in a wagon! Have fun, stay safe, and always smile.

Everyone who knew I was traveling through Amarillo suggested that I try the big Texan steak Ranch. I was really excited and pulling into the driveway. The ambience was everything I hoped. The original cowboy still stands guard over the property and there are all kinds of decorations that celebrate the largeness of Texas. Upon entering the restaurant, you immediately see a case of baked goods and cake slices that are bigger than your head because of course everything in Texas is bigger! I was lucky that I came an hour after the lunch rush because I was seated quickly, and my server was not slow to get to my table. She was very friendly and made a lot of great suggestions. I decided to try one of their signature drinks and went with the Texas pickle. If you do not like pickles, this drink is not for you because it's basically pickle juice, soda and vodka. I probably wouldn't order it again, but it wasn't awful! I also decided to try the 10 ounce filet, which turned out to be about twice as much as I could actually eat. I would really like it if they had a 5 to 6 ounce option because there was a lot of food wasted and it cast a little bit of a shadow on an otherwise good experience. My steak was cooked properly (med rare) and well seasoned. It wasn't the best fillet I've ever had seasoning wise, but it was a great cut of meat, and I definitely have no complaints. The loaded baked potato comes with an ample amount of toppings and was delicious. By the time I was finished eating, there was no room for dessert, but I understand that they're cakes are quite tasty. I was able to watch two gentlemen, attempt to eat the 72 ounce steak, but neither was successful! It was still a lot of fun to be part of the action. When you're finished eating, make sure you go check out the bar area where they have a real shooting gallery as well as a lot of great decorations. There is also a store where you can buy themed items and they have a great selection. I would definitely return again, and I recommend this to anyone who is traveling through Amarillo, looking for a memorable place to eat

I wasn't sure what to expect when I got here, even if I had read the reviews and saw they steak challenge on tv before. The place was packed and pretty crowded. I was greeted as soon as I entered and was told I could place my to go order at the bar. I got to the bar, and the lady who took my order was super helpful in getting everything I wanted without ordering the whole menu. While I waited for my order, I walked around in awe and amazement. There is a gift shop, a shooting gallery, bar, walk past the bar to the restrooms, you'll see a bunch of photographs that move, and the faces expressions change. Super cool. I walked past that, and there were special tables for people who are doing the 72 oz. steak challenge. If you keep walking past that, there is like an outdoor eating area that has a roof. This worked perfectly because it just started raining. I looked to my right, and people were playing corn hole. This is definitely a nice place to hang out, whether you're waiting to be seated or just hanging out with family and let the food digest. My order was simple since we were only staying the night and leaving early in the morning. 18 oz ribeye - Cooked medium, sides loaded baked potato anf cheesy potatoes. Everything was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Never had cheesy potatoes before and they were yummy. Bbq sampler - sausage, brisket, and ribs. Sides I had ordered mac n cheese and potato salad but received mashed potatoes and gravy instead of mac n cheese. Either way, everything was delicious. The sausage had the snap when you bite into it and juicy. Ribs had the smoky flavor but didn't fall off the bone. Brisket was good but not juicy and didn't have fat pieces like I had hoped. I highly recommend this place, and I definitely will be back when I'm in the area
