La Taberna Mexican Bar & Grill — Restaurant in Apex

The food was good, but there needs to be more attention to details by the management. For example, there was a glass vase, like a pint-size Mason jar, on our table, filled with like that expanding foam to fill cracks, and flowers were stuck in that. Well, the "vase" was pretty badly broken, and there were small pieces of glass around the base of the vase. That was bad enough, as our food was close to those shards, but that also means no one had thoroughly wiped off the table. Yuck! In addition, my grandson's plate was chipped in 3 of the 4 corners, and mine was chipped so badly in one corner, that was handed facing me, that I had to turn the plate to make sure the jagged edge pointing out didn't cut my hand as I reached for food. The place has tremendous potential. The decor is cute, but it could be cleaner in there. The service could be a little more attentive. This was a truly spectacular dining experience. We arrived looking for inexpensive Mexican food, and found an absolute treasure. We started with run of the mill chips and salsa, but ordered some guacamole on the side. That's when the magic started for us. The guacamole itself was smooth and fresh with a wonderful blend of flavors. Dinner arrived shortly afterwards. Each meal was plated with skill and expertise. I had shrimp with mushrooms, spinach, and rice. Everything was cooked perfectly with a beauteous balance of sauce and substance. The amount of lettuce wasn't overwhelming. Hints of jalapeno hidden throughout the greens. All of our drinks were refilled regularly. Stopped in for lunch on a Saturday. I ordered huevos rancheros, my wife got a chicken taco salad. We got an order of guacamole.

The guac was kind of slimy and flavorless. My eggs were OK. Certainly nothing special. Even the chips tasted a little stale. My wife's taco salad was limp and disgusting. The waiter came over and asked if everything was good. I said "No." but he just laughed and gave me a thumbs up. I think he thought I was joking because I had cleaned my plate (mine was at least edible and I was hungry, I guess he didn't see that my wife only nibbled on her dish).
