I’ve tried them twice, because they serve bone-in fish. I’ll say upfront that I’m picky about my fried fish and have a strong preference for a seasoned corn meal breading. So for my taste buds, I was disappointed in the croaker. It tasted like it was only seasoned with salt n pepper with the assumption that everyone adds hot sauce to boost it. I don’t use hot sauce. There was no battered texture to it. It is was breaded very light, or flour was used or nothing at all. But if you’ve only lived in NC, you might like this style of fried fish. So I scored high because this style might be a regional preference and my in-laws liked their meal.
I appreciated that the macaroni was baked ( I asked up front) but it taste like processed American cheese used instead of a well blended cheddar cheese.
The rice did not come with enough gravy. In fact the gravy was probably pan drippings from one of their beef dishes. The sides portions were small too when you consider I got two generous size of fish. I don’t recall trying the hush puppies.
The food was prepared hot and fresh.
I ordered take out. I would suggest placing the benches closest to the exit near the register for customers to sit at while waiting for takeout. Otherwise, everyone will continue to pull up at your tables to wait. And I just wasn’t certain they got washed down every time a take out customer did this. However, the restaurant was clean, comfortable seating, televisions to view and restroom nearby.
Bonus: They have a fish market next door to purchase seafood...
Read moreOkay I have lived here all my life, I have known about all the legitimate places to get good seafood and fish. How have I never head of this place. So note there is a Market and an eatery they are side by side. The Eatery has different hours but none the less the fish and the side fixins were on point. I grew up with my grandparents cooking fresh veggies out of the fields/crops they grew and their veggies are that. Seasoned however like my southern grandparents would with ham hocks and I taste sugar as well in the two greens I had ( greenbeans and Collards). I had the Catfish which was just lightly battered and mostly fish while my hubs had the trout, both excellent the catfish as you would expect is thicker and fluffier, while the trout was thinner, and slightly more flavorful (did have little bones too) prob due to the skin and just a fisher fish. They also have chicken and dumplings ( appears only on Thursday and Fridays) so we lucked out with a side dish of that to take home - just like what my family used to make back in the day. I would venture to say the staff are either owners or family of owners they were helpful and friendly. Don't wait till "FishFryFriYay" go on and get some southern food and hospitality any day!. Smaller area to eat but as you expect for a more...
Read moreWhew!!! This place was AMAZING! I had been trying to get over here a couple of weeks and family decided today we'd head out got lunch and so I suggested the Fish House.
Man this food was sooooo good. Two things happened that was unexpected, a couple of customers sat and raved about eating here to the point we had a full blown conversation about how good the food was and church! Second, the owner Mrs Carolyn has put her foot and hand in these recipes. We enjoyed everything she brought out. Might even come be back sooner than expected for the smothered turkey and ox-tails meals.
Easily recommend coming here for a good meal or two or three!!! Next door is the raw seafood bar as well. Thanks to everyone including the young men cooking in the back, they were on...
