Boston | Three great Western bakeries

Hands down the best bakery in the ENTIRE WORLD and if you can’t get behind that it’s definitely the best bakery in the greater Boston area (even featured in The Boston Globe). I have had almost everything thing this bakery has to offer and I can confidently, whole-heartedly, swear that they can do not wrong (there was this one pastry I didn’t like but it had to be a me problem). The owner has perfected the art of flakiness and any croissant like pastry will leave trail of happiness and crumbs. The staff is incredible as well, true gems. Each visit of mine consists of warm greetings and endearing smiles as they fill my bag with delightful treats, sometime I even get an extra morning bun. My favorite is the everything croissant, an explanation will do no justice you’ll just have to try it yourself and you’ll want to get there early before they sell out. Another favorite of mine are the unique cardamom swirls. I bet you’ve never heard of such a thing. Again you’ll just have to go try it. In the afternoon they serve pizza with brilliant (vegetarian friendly) topping combinations and fabulous flavor. Furthermore, I the bakery is women owned, queer owned, LGBTQIA+ plus friendly, and is more welcoming than Starbucks and Tatte adjacent places. I can not speak highly enough of this bakery and if you’ve been searching for something new look no further. The worst thing, I’ve experience are the rude customers that come in at near closing and expect extra efforts from an already amazing hardworking early rising staff. Please go and support. They deserve it and you deserve a treat.

It is hard to write reviews for one’s favorite local venues knowing that they are already feeling the pressure of hard-earned popularity. This bakery/coffeehouse has it all (except for adequate seating). The counter staff is young, convivial, fun—and occasionally, when they are not working flat out serving a line of customers, distractible. The customers (as of summer, 2024) come in waves. If you are lucky, you will walk in and the place will be just about empty. Then suddenly as you are making your order you’ll have that queue of ten people behind you. This is pricey but delivers. The menu has often changeovers with freshly-baked special daily treats that sell out fast. Our family travels out of our way for special mornings that include a walk in nearby Menotomy Park and the Butternut Café. These are invariably warm, happy occasions and I would not hesitate to visit this café with an out-of-town friend to show them what great cafés we have in our area. Again, hard to write this review. Hope Butternut retains this perfect *local* scale of service. My photo is of the curbside parking—Butternut is also directly across the street from the Jason Russell house (a Revolutionary War Historical site with a gracious yard and weekend events). It’s a lovely location.

I returned and ordered the same items. When the young lady grabbed a bag, I knew to tell her I will need her to separate out the savory from the sweet items and she did. The almond croissant was baked perfectly this time and was delicious. The everything croissant was yummy like the last time. All other items were quite good. I have updated my review to reflect their delicious baked goods. Thank you! I spent $30 (included tip) for 5 croissants. The almond one was tasty but baked a bit too hard so every bite resulted in flying shards everywhere. The chocolate croissant and ham and cheese one were average. The cinnamon morning croissant like bun was also over baked so was dry eating. The everything croissant was yummy. Big annoyance is the staffer stuffed (and I mean stuffed) all 5 croissants into one bag so everything tasted like garlic and onion from the everything croissant. I felt a bit ripped off from the experience but giving a generous 3 stars for the everything croissant. Would only recommend if you are right there and need something to eat immediately. Expensive for the quality and service.

Update: I am impressed with the Butternut’s quick response and genuine and sincere apology. I will give them another try tomorrow and will update my review...
