Only 10 minutes from downtown, I've visited The Smokin' Onion as I've learned this was a popular vegan spot in Asheville, and I was travelling to North Carolina for another event. The setting is small to mid-sized, with seating available for at least 5 couples or a few families. They have a brunch and lunch menu, both served from open to close, and it's a brunch spot, so you'll need to get there before end of lunch time. I came with my mate who likes to try vegan food. We've ordered the Town Gyro w/ fries, and the Big Chick'n Biscuit w/ fried Brussels.
The seitan in the Town Gyro was seasoned well. It comes on a huge pita. This is shareable between two people. This was probably one of the better gyros I've had since going veg. The fries are crispy, and it comes mixed with fried onions as well. 9/10.
The Big Chick'n Biscuit was probably one of the best chick'n biscuits I've had. The chick'n comes between a scallion biscuit, which is very flavorful. The fried Brussels were amazing as well. I don't normally eat Brussels sprouts, but when it is fried the way The Smokin Onion does it (or in a similar fashion), I will eat it. I saw it on the menu online and decided to get it as it looked delicious. The chick'n in the biscuit was crunchy, it came with an amazing aioli sauce. I added onions and lettuce (it's optional, but it is free if you do decide to add it). Halfway through, the biscuit did start to break apart, but it's nothing I haven't expected. Nothing that a fork couldn't fix for me. This biscuit (and some other food that I've tried) made me ponder on moving to Asheville (I live in Atlanta, where there is an abundance of vegan food/options, so this is saying a lot). 10/10
If and when I pass through Asheville again, I am definitely going to come to The Smokin' Onion again. This place is amazing. It's also popular, so whatever the good hype is about it, believe it! Definitely try this place one morning/afternoon if you're in or passing through Asheville...or even if you live in Asheville and just looking for more food options. You won't be disappointed with this place. The staff are also friendly and respectable. Thank you for...
Read moreOkay let me first start by saying as soon as I looked at the menu, I literally wanted one of each item. My husband and I are from Franklin and we are newly vegetarian, we found this place on google when we put in best vegetarian places in Asheville and this was the first pop up. The options here are awesome. I have never in my life had brussel with this much flavor. They were cooked to perfection with an insane amount of flavor with each bite!! The buffalo cauliflower wrap was TO DIE FOR. Who needs nasty meat when you have cauliflower!? Seriously though, this was mine and my husband’s first go at it and it blew us away. The fries are crispy but not too crispy… perfect in my opinion, definitely the best fries around and I LOVE onions so the grilled onions in there were great. This place was busy but they still got the food to me within 10 minutes. The prices were very affordable and they give you your moneys worth!! It was so good that we went back the next day! If you’re a vegetarian this is THE place for you, don’t even question it just trust this review. If you aren’t vegetarian, you should still try this place because you will see that you can still have good food without meat!! 10/10...
Read moreFinally made it to the Smoking Onion. Been on my list since they opened and I’m sorry it took so long to get there. Service was excellent, food was excellent-fully exceeding my high expectations. I always try a Gyro anywhere I go that has a vegan version and this was hands down the best I’ve had. The fact that the seitan and pita were housemade made it even better. Both were the perfect consistency and flavor. And the tzatziki was spot on. Fries with smoked onions on the side and BOOM, flavor explosion. My wife got the taco salad which was delicious as well. We were so hungry and it looked so good when it came out (very quickly) that we devoured it before any pics were taken. Our friends (not vegan or veg) saw our food and decided to order as well. The chicken sandwich one of them got looked so good and he said it was the best he’s had. He said if all vegan chicken tasted like that he would never eat chicken again. Huge win. I almost ordered one to go for the ride home but decided to save that experience for next time. And there will be a next time and it will be soon. Don’t sleep on the...
