We’d been to Angelo’s in the past before it was sold/acquired, and we are also big fans of a couple other restaurants owned by Aspen Hospitality Group. So, my husband and I decided to return to Angelo’s tonight for dinner and had very high hopes for another great meal here but it was a really underwhelming experience. There were some good parts to the meal, which is why I can’t bring myself to only give a 1-star. Our server himself was fantastic and it was clear that he was doing his absolute best on what was a rather busy night. Also, the beef carpaccio appetizer was delicious and definitely the standout of our meal.
As far as why this experience only gets 2-stars from us — The restaurant was clearly at or above capacity and as such, the atmosphere was not very relaxing as a result. It felt rather hectic tonight, which I realize is due to being a peak week, but we’ve been to other Aspen restaurants that were just as busy this week and they still managed to create a relaxing dining experience. We were sat down late at our table even with a reservation (which I do think Angelo’s proactively handled well by giving out complimentary sparkling wine, so kudos there!). Upon being seated, one of the hostesses made it immediately clear to us that she’d need the table back in 1 hr 30 minutes. While I don’t expect to be there all night, this remark felt really off-putting and as if she wanted us to rush from the start. For the prices that Angelo’s charges, I’d expect a lot more from the atmosphere as well as the food. My husband said his Fettuccine Bolognese entree was just ‘ok’, but nothing to write home about. Meanwhile, I had the Tonnarelli all’Astice and the pasta was very overdone as well as drowning in sauce. The one thing I loved about this dish was the lobster itself, but the pasta and sauce really fell flat for being the most expensive one on the menu. It felt like the kitchen rushed out this entree, especially since I had to send it back the 1st time due to there being no lobster in it whatsoever. Our server profusely apologized for this mistake, and I don’t blame him at all for this. The kitchen was clearly overwhelmed and it showed in the quality of our entrees. Disappointed to see what Angelo’s has turned into following the sale. I think we’ll be sticking with our other Aspen Hospitality Group restaurant go-to’s...
Read moreMy reviews are a rarity and they usually sing praises. However, this establishment provoked me enough to break my usual silence. We arrived slightly early (reservations for 5:45pm), thanks to Google stating a 5pm opening, but it was 5:30pm, no biggie. The host greeted us with a cold, terse remark indicating they weren't open yet, and just turned away without further ado. We shrugged off the initial rudeness, and returned later, only to be met by a hostess who was equally uninviting. She insisted we hand over our coats with a rude explanation that it's "not recommended to hang coats over the chairs." As the evening unfolded, it was evident that many patrons had their coats over their chairs, making her insistence seem unnecessarily rude.
The chill in the air grew colder as the main host or manager made his rounds, topping off wine, engaging in friendly banter with every table but ours. We were blatantly ignored, left to feel like unwelcome intruders in a snobbish enclave. This was supposed to be a joyous anniversary dinner, yet the staff's behavior cast a long shadow over our celebration. The high-class facade was suffocating, making us feel utterly out of place.
The food was the sole redeeming factor, impeccable in every sense. Yet, the taste of rudeness left a sour note that even the top notch dishes couldn't erase. The table staff were the only staff who exhibited a shred of courtesy, their prompt service was a stark contrast to the cold demeanor of the rest of the place. Our bill total was $$$$, a steep sum for an experience devoid of basic hospitality. The lack of a simple smile, a friendly gesture, or just basic politeness was glaringly absent, turning what should have been a joyous occasion into a night of regret.
I rarely vent, but this experience hit hard. Snubbed on a night meant for celebration, we left bitter. This place not only failed in basic courtesy, but tarnished our...
