Called beforehand to reserve space for ~30 people We came in increments of 5-6 due to separate cars and ordered on different pieces of paper -since a single large table fit two 'groups' of us and we did family style, we had two numbers per table -three tables. Since there were so many of us, I don't understand why they just didn't come over and take our orders versus us writing it down and them guessing about which table it belonged it -so inefficient. Two groups ordered a #44 -which refers to either egg drop soup or a beef dish. Instead of coming over and asking which, the woman at the counter said it was too late and she just assumed. She didn't even come over to ask if the order was what we wanted -she basically said, 'you didn't order right, you're going to get whatever we give you.' They got so confused about where dishes belonged that the cook would try to put down dishes and we'd have to say we didn't order it, another table did. The man didn't speak English so some of our party couldn't even claim the dish until an actual server came and said the dish out loud. This especially got bad when the cook tried to keep giving my group a spicy beef dish. We had to reiterate that we ordered a soup, chicken, squid, and seafood dish -it couldn't possibly be ours. I hate spicy food and we wouldn't order that. Don't order the boba/milk tea. We had to ask three different times for rice. If you're expecting something to the quality of Houston Chinatown or Austin's First Chinese BBQ, lower your standards. The dishes are small and not as good.
TLDR: They can't handle large parties -annoying because drinks and silverware are all self-serve. All they have to do is put the food on the correct table. The food is ok but don't order a drink that isn't bottled or canned. I'm all for ma-and-pa places but this restaurant just seemed overwhelmed and not very grateful. The often screamed dish names and didn't ever apologize for their inefficiency. I wouldn't eat here again -I wish I had tried a sushi place...
Read moreReasonable Sichuan food. In Austin!
That's pretty much good enough for me. It's run out of what is clearly a repurposed old American restaurant with booths, and they don't seem to know the meaning of service, but if you bear in mind you're there for the food and not the ambiance, it's actually decent Sichuan-province numbingly spicy food. (You may have to ask them to make it spicier.)
C3 Szechuan Stir Fried Chicken W. Chili (四川辣子鸡) ($9.50): While not exactly the authentic Sichuan flavor I ordinarily crave, it's not bad still. It has a flavor sort of between an authentic Chongqing Chicken (重庆辣子鸡) and an American-style Kungpao Chicken (宫保鸡丁), which happens to be one of my favorite American-Chinese dishes. Like is often the case with this dish, it tastes even better the day after, as the flavors have seeped in more deeply.
Popcorn Chicken (重庆辣子鸡) ($13.25): I ordered this item by accident while trying to order the above. It's spicy deep-fried chunks of chicken with a good ma flavor. I liked it, though not as much as I like the previous (admittedly fairly different) dish.
Dry Pot Chicken (干锅鸡) ($12.50): This has a more authentic Sichuan flavor, with bony chunks of chicken in a dry stir fry, though the meat is a little on the dry side I thought.
S31 Spicy Fish (水煮鱼片) ($10.99): Good, and a good value item considering normally fish is charged at slightly higher prices than meets. It's got fish filets and veggies swimming in a...
Read moreYum! Great food at a great price. Sesame chicken has a crisp crunch that I have never found that and the other restaurant. It is tremendously delicious and I don't know how they do it. But... You really should eat it as soon as it hits your table because the delicious sauce slowly softens the crust........ Mongolian beef is an even more delicious meal and must be tried. I cannot find the words to describe this taste sensation..... ..... Some people complained that it is rather drab inside, but to me, that is part of the charm - and the reason why the prices are so reasonable. Is large base with giant round tables that have the spinning lazy susan top - these tables and the plane decor make me feel like I'm back in Chinatown, New York City............. I think this would be a perfect place to host a groom's dinner if you are on a tight budget: the spinning tables would be fun, there is a large space to sit, walk, and chat, and you won't be disturbed...........customer service needs to be perked up a bit though. That's why I didn't give it five stars. When I walked in all seven employees glared at me. No one ever smiled and it felt very weird. Later though, when I left, three employees redeem themselves by waving at me and saying goodbye..... . Definitely give this...
