YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE. I cannot stress this enough. Bom Bakeshop has some of the best mochi donuts I have ever tried. I went to 3 of their popups, and I am absolutely addicted! When I first moved to Austin and tried some mochi donuts from another local business I was very disappointed. But Bom Bakeshop completely restored my hope in the Austin food scene. The donuts had the absolute most perfect texture- they were soft, fluffy, and chewy with just the right amount of sweetness. Each flavor I've tried is amazing!!!!

Excuse the crusty photos. I get so excited whenever I order these donuts, that I have to take a bite ASAP.

Detailed review per flavor: Christmas flavors: -Hot Chocolate. Sweet and spicy. The marshmallow toppings reminded me a lot of red hot candy. The spice is very subtle and complementary to the richness of the chocolate. If you don't enjoy sweet and spicy flavor combinations, this might not be for you. -Toffee Crunch. A+++++ The flavor and texture was amazing! It was chocolatey and buttery. The contrast between the soft, fluffy, chewy donut and crispy, crunchy toffee was divine, as if it fell straight from the heavens! -Gingerbread House. They did not play with the ginger on this one. The ginger flavor was very strong, which I personally enjoyed. There were some dots toppings, and the citrus flavor from the candy really helped compliment the spice of the ginger. It was a very refreshing flavor in contrast to some of the richer options.

LNY flavors: -Yuzu. If you love lemon starburst candy, this is an absolute must! I felt like I was eating the donut version of a citrus candy, like hi-chew. It had that same reminiscent mild citrus, sweet, chewy candy vibe. I would definitely order this one again. -Red Bean. I loved this one. It reminded me a lot of the sesame balls with red bean at dim sum. I probably like this much more, since the red bean flavor comes from the glaze, which is a bit thinner in contrast to a red bean paste. For me, this flavor really suits the texture of the donut, since I associate red bean with warm and chewy elements. -Ube I found the flavor relatively subtle, since the sweet and starchy flavor of the ube almost seamlessly blends into the donut. This flavor had just the right amount of sweetness. I'd definitely order again. -Lychee I honestly did not know that this flavor was lychee when I first bit into it. To be fair, lychee doesn't have the most potent or distinct flavor as a fruit. That being said, this mostly taste sweet to me and I would have probably thought it was vanilla if I never checked my order. -Mandarin. They really nailed down their citrus flavors. This one also reminded me of candy, and I loved it. I could probably eat 10 of these in one sitting. I didn't even think I liked oranges that much until I had this donut.

Regular recurring flavors: -Vanilla & Chocolate Can't go wrong with either of these flavors. -Matcha The flavor is very well balanced. It's not over or underwhelming. I think it also has just the right amount of sweetness. I think these 3 flavors in particular are great safety options if you aren't too sure what to order.

If you still aren't convinced that you should try the mochi donuts from Bom Bakeshop, it's also worth letting you know that these are some of the most sweet and genuine business owners you will ever meet. They really take the time to get to know their customers. They are really patient and will help you decide what to order or listen to your feedback. Teresa is definitely one to remember a face, which shows me that she really appreciates each and every one of her customers. They do everything they can to help keep their customers happy, and I can only wish them more success and prosperity in their business. They...

I absolutely love these donuts and have been following them since the beginning. The best part about these donuts is that they are gluten free. Although I do not necessarily need to be gluten free I know many people who have to be and have had to give up things they love like donuts. Mochi donuts are a special chewy amazing texture because well IT’S MOCHI. When trying these have that in mind. This is a new experience. Especially if you have not had Mochi donuts. If you have not had Mochi donuts before and you try these and don’t like them…then maybe Mochi donuts are not for you and that is OK. No need to leave a bad review because you didn’t enjoy this cultural experience. But, if you have had mochi donuts elsewhere and have a point of reference, sure then you can point out what you do like or don’t like. But remember these are people who give there all to this small business. This is someone’s dream. And with or without all of that being said, these Mochi donuts are AMAZING. And they are so darn creative in their flavors and the love they put into them. And I really love the owners and how they utilize their small business to make an impact on marginalized groups in whatever way they can. I think that is so important above everything else. I don’t know these people personally but I’ve been following them on social media and I really appreciate the efforts they put forth into their craft...

I finally got my hands on the mochi churros from Bom Bakeshop at their first ever pop-up event, and I could die from happiness. The churros were perfectly chewy and delicious, just like I imagined, and had just the right amount of cinnamon sugar on them. The team also had a really organized and helpful timed pick-up to keep things orderly and spaced out during CV-19, which I really appreciated.

For anyone not familiar with the texture of mochi, it's delightfully chewy but not too dense. I'm not gluten free and love a normal yeast donut too, but I am very partial to mochi and mochi-chewy textures, and recommend that everyone try it. Definitely give Bom Bakeshop a try but just know that it's not like a traditional yeast or cake donut!

I can't speak for the mochi donuts from Bom Bakeshop yet, though I expect they're just as awesome - hope to finally try them sometime soon!

**Edit - I was lucky enough to win the lottery for a box of special holiday flavored mochi donuts, and omggg they were SO amazing. The flavors were delicious (gingerbread with dulce de leche, Mexican vanilla, boozy eggnog and sugarplum fairy) and the donuts were perfectly chewy and delightful. I can't get enough of the donuts and the churros! And Teresa and her husband that run Bom Bakeshop are super sweet - I live for their message of spreading joy, especially during the pandemic. I really do travel for food! 😂🤣 But Austin is where I get the best mochi donuts in Texas. @bombakeshop is an amazing hubs & wife team who work like mad scientists to create art that happens to taste amazing. 🤤 They created the essence of Austin and the Aloha spirit in each bite. (There’s a reason why Mochi donuts can’t be mass produced and franchised because the best mochi donuts need to be carefully crafted so it doesn’t taste stale or chewy (like a teething ring) ). For reference check out Modo Hawaii in LA or any mochi donut spots in Hawaii. A good donut tastes amazing fresh and the next morning tastes just as good yesterday (if it lasts that long) What I ❤️ most is their commitment to their standards and values. While most businesses try to please the masses a la “the customer is always right” @bombakeshop focuses on people who align with their values and standards. ( if you don’t they are totally okay with it🤷🏻‍♂️) For me I respect that and 1000% support any business that puts emphasis on people & culture over money & success! If you ever get a chance to talk to them I would highly encourage you because you’ll be amazed by her story. Once you understand the “Why” you will walk away happy your supporting an amazing business!
