Not the best BBQ I've had. Small portions for the price. My lunch plate, brisket and sausage, slaw, pinto beans, and iced tea for a tad over twenty bucks. The brisket was juicy and tender. But it lacked any sort of detectable seasoning or that great smokey BBQ flavor, e.g. smoke ring, you get when meat is seasoned properly and in a smoker for 12 or more hours at low heat. I had to depend on the sweet-tangy BBQ sauce to enjoy the brisket. The jalapeno sausage was the best part of my lunch. It was nice, not too spicy, and flavorful. But it was dry from being cooked to death. Slaw was just okay, kinda bland mayo with a slight mustard base, I think? Nothing about the slaw was memorable. Nor the pinto beans as they were the plain same-ol' same-ol' you can get anywhere. Everything I had for lunch was mediocre. But I haven't tried everything on Don's extensive menu from breakfast to dinner. My brother likes their burgers, which I'll try when I go back. Don't take all of this the wrong way, just because I did not care for the BBQ doesn't mean it's not good. I'm just picky. I've had plenty of worse BBQ in my day. I always give a place a second and even a third chance. It's not a fair assessment otherwise. Every place has off days and I have to assume this was theirs. I'll update my review after I've gone back. Be prepared to park on the street though. They literally have only a dozen parking...
Read moreWent to place an order on 4-8-20 for some brisket after googling the Oak Hill location and clicking on the website option to check the price, listed at $13.99 a pound. When I placed my order it was rung up at $18.99 a pound. I mentioned that it showed as $13.99 on the website, the cashier, Destiny, just looked at me and said in an irritated tone, “yeah, that’s been wrong for a long time if you look for our menu on google, you’re total is $XX.XX.”
It’s been wrong on google for a long time? What else to people use to look up menu prices? Sure enough on the receipt it shows a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT website then what is attached to the website link when you google search the location.
Judging by her irritated tone she has had this brought up to her many, many times, and her bosses/owners apparently don’t care enough to have their information corrected on google so that they don’t mislead potential customers with wrong price. If this has been a problem for a long time, then I think it’s safe to say that they are intentionally not having this problem fixed so that they can mislead customers with the wrong price and are just hoping no one questions the price of their order. After this experience, I will not...
Read moreDonn's ain't no "TV" barbecue joint and I think that suits them just fine. You know what? It suits me just fine too.
Donn's is simple, honest-to-goodness barbecue in a clean, no frills environment and they have a pretty comprehensive menu that includes Texas/American "home cookin'" standards like chicken fried steaks and cheeseburgers. Pay-at-the-counter service is pretty swift and the fellas in the back start carving out your order as soon as you start yammerin' to the cashier.
From order taking, money exchange and walking with your order to your table/car (on a wayward Tuesday night) - I spent less than 8 minutes. Even on a busy Saturday, I can't imagine someone waiting for too long for their food when compared to other offerings in town.
If you're expecting some karmatic, enlightening experience via barbecue that might earn you bragging rights amongst those traveling on a smoked meat odyssey, then maybe Donn's isn't for you. If you're looking for something solid, convenient and has a variety of items for a group of people (including breakfast all day), maybe give them a holler. They'll continue getting...
