Late-Night Gold at the Bar. 5 Stars for Jim’s You know a place is solid when you roll up at 9:30pm and not only are they still serving, they’re actually happy to see you. That’s exactly what happened at Jim’s Restaurant, where we ended up grabbing a couple seats at the bar and had one of the best meals of the week. Kevin, our server, deserves his own plaque on the wall. Friendly, relaxed, and clearly a night-shift MVP. The kind of guy who checks in just the right amount and makes you feel like the barstools were saved just for you. We ordered the chicken fried steak, and let’s just say: if comfort food were an Olympic sport, Jim’s would be bringing home the gold. Crispy, perfectly seasoned, smothered in that dreamy gravy that makes you question your loyalty to any other dinner option. And because we like to live deliciously, we took home a full stack of pancakes (pro tip: they reheat like a dream) and a slice of coconut cream pie. Light, rich, and not too sweet — like a Hallmark movie but edible. Jim’s isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel — they just actually know how to make it roll. Great service, great food, and a vibe that makes you want to come back before you’ve even left. Michelin stars? Nah. Jim’s has Texas charm which is better in every way.

If you’re in Austin and looking for a place that serves up heartwarming comfort food with a side of genuine Texas hospitality, look no further than Jim’s Diner. From the moment you walk through the doors, you’re greeted like family—warm smiles, the smell of sizzling bacon, and the inviting clink of coffee mugs make you feel right at home. The menu is exactly what you’d hope for in a classic diner—stacked pancakes, juicy burgers, crispy chicken-fried steak, and the best homemade pies in town. Their breakfast is served all day (thankfully), and let me just say, the migas and biscuits & gravy are nothing short of legendary. Service is fast, friendly, and never rushed. The staff knows the regulars by name, and even if it’s your first visit, you’ll leave feeling like one. It’s the kind of place where time slows down just a little—where you can grab a booth, a fresh cup of coffee, and enjoy a slice of what Austin used to be. Whether you’re fueling up after a night out or catching up with old friends on a Sunday morning, Jim’s Diner is the kind of local treasure that reminds you why Austin is special. Come hungry, leave happy—and don’t skip the pie.

On 25 October the PiHead group visited Jim's. This group visits restaurants throughout Central Texas searching for perfection in their pie menu. Today, at Jim's, they came close. They claim their Pies are made in house and we believe them. Our sampling of the Apple and Coconut Cream Pies proved to be excellent in flavor and texture. We wholeheartedly recommend you order a slice alone or after your meal. We would be wrong not to mention the excellent food and prices. The service was excellent, fast and friendly. We're putting this Jim's Restaurant in the Top Group of Restaurants you should visit.

I've been here 4 times. The first time was good. I went on my birthday for breakfast with my grandpa and the food was good, the service was also good, that was that 2 years ago. I recently moved back into the area so I went a few more times, I worked as a waitress downtown for 3 years so I understand that mistakes happen. But my last 3 visits have been awful. The 2nd time I went late at 10pm and ordered a steak but they had no potatoes so instead I ordered a salad and was charged extra, my boyfriend ordered a breakfast which came out good, so whatever, no big deal. The second time I went I ordered a cesar salad, they were out of cesar and instead gave me a side salad with ranch, again no big deal I was hungry so I ate it despite ordering a regular size and being given a much smaller portion. Today I was really sick and ordered a side salad and tortilla soup. The soup okay and had lot of chicken, but my side salad came with no dressing so I ended up paying for a salad I didn't eat because I had no dressing. When I feel better I'll go get some dressing because I probably should already have some at home but I didn't which is why I ordered this instead of going to HEB. When I called they said they would talk to the hostess and that was the end of the conversation. I dont know if I'm just unlucky or what however I'm extremely disappointed with the lack of product/ the consistent incorrect orders and the way that management handled the situation. I'm more upset that I tipped (because I know what severs make) even on a to go order and this is the 3rd time in a row that I've not received what I ordered. And for those reasons I will not return but I do hope others have not/ will not have the same experience I have had...

You just have to give this place a shot. Home cooking, real food, and open 24 hours a day

Above Average Breakfast, Quantity Breakfast is above average, Price above average, Value-Above average. But I don't go for the breakfast, it's easy enough to find a decent breakfast around town. I mean how hard is it to mess up some eggs and sausage.

This is why I go !! Lunch, Dinner, Entrees, GREAT !! I usually get the daily special (starts 11 AM) which runs on weekdays, which is an entree with two sides, a roll, and a drink (sweet tea for me) it's a little over 8 dollars with a drink and only 7.49 without the drink. It's a ton of food and I honestly shouldn't eat it all in one sitting but it's hard to resist. Monday is "Old fashioned Meat Loaf, Tuesday-Smothered Steak, Wednesday Classic Pot Roast (juicy), Thursday Baked Chicken (delicious, so big it's like half a chicken), I got baked chicken and it included the leg, the thigh, the wing, and the best part of the chicken breast, Are you kidding. I was hooked from then on.Friday- Fried Fish Fillet. The only thing I skip is meatloaf Monday, everything else is Whoot Whoot !!

The style of the building, It has an old 1950s feel to it, especially the one on 290/71Oak Hill. The crowd it draws are the older truckers, church ladies this is the one on 290/71. The one North is a little more diverse. Basically, they locked the image in place from the 1950s which could be a good or a bad thing.

Black eye peas as a side only on Tuesday, bummer !! They have seasonal sides, vegetables etc but they have plenty of sides to...

I have been going to Jim’s for decades now for breakfast. A good sign for any restaurant is that many of the waitstaff are still working there. It’s busy, chatter is lively… it’s a multi-generational diner. I should have written a review a long time back! That in mind, my most recent visit proved to be a disappointment. It had me thinking the place was bought out. I was greeted by a young hostess and immediately seated, which was really nice. She asked if I wanted coffee, then asked if I knew what I wanted to order. Their chicken fried steak breakfast is a good deal, coming wit crispy hash browns, 2 eggs and a biscuit which is what I ordered. Now realize, she was not my waitress. As a result when the food arrived, I had no utensils and ended up asking the bus staff to please get me napkins and cutlery. Now, I usually have a tablet so I can check up on news, but for some reason even though I could connect, I could not get internet because the agreement page refused to load on either tablet or my phone. Just seemed like everything was broken. The food was still great and eventually someone came by to see if I wanted more coffee and leave me my check (last time I was there my steak breakfast ended up costing 2x because eggs, hash browns and gravy were itemized!). I was very sad and told the cashier there would be no tip this time because I had no wait-staff. I will, however, continue going to Jim’s. Hopefully there will be a...
