I've only tried 3 flavors so far, but the ice cream varies from good to very good.
Compared to Amy's: I like Amy's mix-ins but I don't like Amy's ingredient list. I'd rather spend the money on the few Haagen-Dazs flavors that have all real/natural ingredients. Amy's does have a creamier, fattier mouth-feel but I'm betting that's from the "Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum, Carrageenan" (which are all thickeners, albeit all-natural ones) rather than a higher fat content. Lick's ice cream is closer to an ice milk, but then so are many of the Haagen-Dazs flavors that don't have thickeners.
The good:
Real/natural ingredients, locally sourced. No fillers or thickeners. Unusual flavor combinations. The BEST waffle cones I have ever tasted. As in, I never thought they could be this good; I'm coming back just for the waffle cones. For the record, I had the vanilla cone. Can't vouch for chocolate.
The bad:
Expensive. But if you care about real/natural ingredients, locally sourced; if you want your ingredients to be produced by people in jeans and a baseball cap and not people in a lab coat and safety goggles, you know you're going to pay more and you're not going to mind.
The parking is mind-boggling bad. Considering Lick shares the world's smallest parking lot with Barley Swine (and a couple more businesses), do not even attempt to come around dinner time unless you Uber/Lyft... oh, wait. You can't. The garage next door has a few more spots, but not nearly enough for the kind of business Lick and Barley Swine can generate. There is no street parking on Burnet but you might snag some parking on the street behind the strip mall.
Subjective: YMMV.
I don't care for savory flavors in my sweets, so I wasn't thrilled with the lemon poundcake flavor. It doesn't list it, but I could have sworn I tasted rosemary, not mint, in the ice cream. And it was a bit too much rosemary for my taste.
The salted caramel was very good.
The vanilla honey was good if predictably a bit bland. It was a nice base for the optional, seasonal dewberry sauce and waffle...
Read moreI had a magical ice cream experience because of 1 part delicious flavors and 1 part STELLAR customer service! You can have a great brand name and an awesome product, but if the people that represent the brand are rude and unprofessional, their customer service will leave a bad taste in the mouths of the patrons no matter how yummy the ice cream is.
I’m sharing this because I went to this location of Lick several days ago and I had the best ice cream experience of my life and it was all because of Jessica!
When I arrived, there was a long line almost out the door and she was the only person working. But Jessica was cool, calm, collected, and friendly. She didn’t make anyone feel rushed to order, she smiled genuinely, she wasn’t huffing and puffing, or rolling her eyes, or having a breakdown. She was doing her job and she was doing it so well!
After about 30 minutes of waiting in line it was my turn to order. I would’ve honestly waited two hours for this ice cream experience because of how pleasant Jessica was. I felt compelled to tell her that SHE is the reason why people were willing to wait in line for their ice cream. She made people feel comfortable and welcomed and that helped ease all of our anxiousness about waiting. She answered everyone’s questions and she didn’t make anyone feel like they were inconveniencing her.
We live in very bizarre times, but it’s people like Jessica who share their magic with the world and it genuinely makes you feel good! This is a priceless characteristic!
Jessica isn’t the owner of the Lick Ice Cream Co., but she was more poised, pleasant, and professional than most business owners I’ve ever interacted with.
I am so happy that I had a craving for some delicious ice cream that night so I could be reminded of what good quality of character looks like.
I don’t know if the owners or managers or whoever will read this, but I could not let another day go by without leaving this stellar review for Jessica at the Lick ice cream shop on Burnet in...
Read moreLick has fabulous flavors and a fun atmosphere. As a neighborhood customer of their Burnet location, I am sad to say that I am pretty dissatisfied with their customer service. This is probably my first public review, but my experience was laughable and ridiculous. A couple of weekends ago, we got rained out of the pool, so I brought my family and a ton of out of town guests with me to Lick. I had a stamp card that was full when it was my turn to order. It indicated two scoops on the card, so I ordered two separate scoops not thinking much of it. When I came to pay, the cashier wouldn't honor the stamp card, because the two single scoops were in separate tiny cups. After an awkward discussion, we arrived at an impasse. I then requested a larger cup to put both scoops in. She agreed since apparently that fulfilled the stamp card's requirements. I dumped my two singles in the larger cup and then she took my two empty singles, marched to the trash and threw them away. What a waste of cups, waste of time and totally useless gesture. Without any measure of flexibility, it honestly made us all laugh. It was clear the cashier was obeying the strictest of policies, so I honestly don't fault her at all. The message, though, was we are inflexible to a absurd degree. When you charge that much for ice cream, and get 20 people in from one customer's recommendation, do you really need to throw away two little cups to...
